How can I tell the difference between a 1800a and a 1800b gas engine from the outside? Thanks

Easy: Look at the distributor side of the engine. The 1800 A engines have a bypass spin on oil filter located about the same place a filter would be for an 88. There is also a place ahead of the distributor for a full flow oil filter which was used on the 1800A diesel engines. The 1800 B engines will have a full flow sock type oil filter ahead of the distributor and no place for the bypass filter. Block casting numbers are different. An 1800 A series will take a 283 sleeve st.
