Hello, I have been on vacation for a while but i am back trying to get my 2N running, to recap my problem, i am wiring a 1941/2 2N.
Which from what i have come to realize is a custom wiring that i have inherited through a purchase, i have restored her up to this point the WIRING, when i say custom this is why, I have a MAGNETO, with a ALT, Voltage Reg, and a Starter Syilonoid, on the dash i have a toggle switch and a push button start, oil pressure and amps, so i have her turning over, oil pressure, but no spark, i have timed the MAG as i hope, i found TDC on #1cyl, adjusted the MAG at just after impulse release and secured it. BUT STILL NO SPARK, know also at this point the only WIRING i have hooked up is BATT Ground to frame and POS BATT to starter Sylonoid, starter to opposite side of starter sylonoid, small post of sylonoid to push button start and opposite side of push button switch to ground on frame. i figure after getting fire i can work on the charging system, I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE, ANY HELP WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED...

I have never worked with a magneto before, but it seems to me that you should have spark whether or not it is in time. So, setting the timing will not fix your problem. Also the magneto will spark without any battery, alternator, solenoid, or starter. So I would think your problem is inside the magneto

chartwe5.......I remember that weird farmerized abomination from about 1-month back. You have now better described yer electrical installation this time.....howsomevers.....yer description still raises questions that need clarification. What is that "toggle switch" on the dash for??? It is NOT normal. Is it the "kill" switch for yer magneto???

Yes, early 9N's had a dash mounted starter push-button instead of a tranny interlocked starter button. Yes, the 2-terminal starter pushbutton can be used to "trigger" the 3-terminal starter solenoid....iff'n the little middle terminal is "HOT". Since the 3-terminal starter mounted solenoid can be mounted 2-different ways, you must be certain the little middle terminal is "HOT" with either a test-lite or a voltmeter. Iff'n not "HOT" just remount yer solenoid 180deg. Simple, eh?

Since MAGNETO's don't need batterys to sparkle, it don't make enny difference whether yer battery is positive or negative ground 'cuz yer starter motor don't care, yer solenoid don't care either. The ONLY thing that cares whether yer positive or negative ground is yer solid state voltage regulator built into yer 12v alternator and that DEMANDS negative ground.

Before you mounted yer magneto on yer engine, did you test yer magneto for sparkies???......respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

chartwe5,Do you have the engine where it will crank over with the starter now? Also no wire hooked to the mag kill post?Ground a spark plug to the head and attach a plug wire to the plug.Crank the engine over and watch the plug for spark.Do you have spark at that plug?

Hey Dell, No i never did check for "SPARKIES" how can i do that, this would tell me if the MAG needs rebuilt, what about the points inside tha MAG, could that be part of the problem ????

Charter........well guess what? you check yer magneto on yer work bench not on the engine. As I said, magnetos don't need batterys so testing for sparkies on the workbench mean you haffta turn yer magneto drive roundy-roundy and watch fer sparkies, or gitt snapped on yer keister. You'll learn.

Iff'n yer still having magneto problems, use the internet to find specialists in magnetos repair. They are out there. Your PROBLEM, you should be able to find the fixer just as eazy as I can with google. ......respectfully, Dell

sand points and re-adjust them to specs. if you have spark re-time and put back on test for spark you should have. if not you may have to rebuild. but that should get you started. hook one wire to the toggle switch first and hook the otherto the frame. a little advise..... if the carb. works and you get fire pull start the tractor instead of cranking with starter for the first few times it starts a whole lot faster.

Charter........I'll bettcha I'd find enny old sparkplug and plug it into enny magneto sparkplug wire and watch fer sparkies while I manually twirled the magneto drive on the workbench. Simple, eh? ........respectfully, Dell

Thanks Dell, I am going to try that first thing in the morning, i will let all you guys know what happens, lets hope the MAG does not need rebuild, if i need to get it rebuilt what is a fair price to pay for your MAG to get rebuilt
any ideas

Charter........What is the "braggin' rights" to a magneto worth to you??? That's how much I'd pay to have a magneto rebuilt. NEW 4-nipple frontmount distributor and 12v squarecan ignition coil WITHOUT all the problems, $250? (cheap)....... respectfully, Dell

Magnetos are good, but they ALSO need timing... internally. It is called E-GAP... Efficiency Gap.. and that takes place during magneto assembly... THEN the magneto assembly is timed to the ENGINE...

Good Stuff... duey
