335 water pump

I was hauling bucket loads of gravel, filling pot holes in my long drive way , this afternoon, and heard the fanbelt start squeeling. I jumped off and stepped up by the radiator, and could see that the fan wasn't turning. The belt went to smoking, so I shut it off, and went to the shop and got a 1/2" wernch and loosened the alternator, and belt, so I could drive it to the shed. The pump was frozen hard, and couldn't free it. I called Welters to order a water pump, and got sticker shock, when the gal on the phone told me $145.00. She told me that there was a pump rebuild kit available, which is much cheaper. I went out to the shed and started removing sheet metal, muffler, air cleaner, hood, and ever thing back to the dash, just to access the dumb thing. I only have about two bolts left, and should be able to lift the pump, with fan attatched, off the motor. (What a dumb place to put a distributor) It sure is tight getting to the pump bolts! What I want to know is what am I going to look for, when I finally tear the pump apart? I am trying to see if I can get by with the rebuild kit, or if I have to order the whole pump! So far I put Welters on hold, till I can look at mine.

You just might be right! I took the pump to my NAPA store, and had the fan hub pressed off today. I got home, cleaned the grease off, and removed the spring keeper, and found that I needed a press again, to remove the shaft and bearings. Then when I recieve the rebuild kit, I most certenaly will need a press again, to reassemble. Harbor freight wants $ 200.00 for a 20 ton press.

If you have a good auto parts store they can get you one. I paid $95 for mine from mom and pop auto parts store. he did what most others are to lazy to do he got this big book out looked it up grabbed the phone talked for a minute then hung up. He then turned to me and said i can have it here at 8AM tomorrow morning.

Before you press the bearing out of the housing, be sure to remove the retainer wire. Its in the hole midway down the side of the housing,it is pressed in the groove in the shaft and housing.

I took Texas's advice, and called my NAPA store and told Joel what I needed, he is the most experienced guy there. He told me to give him the wk end to check, and he would get back with me. Joel called this morning, and told me to bring him the pump, and the parts from Welters, when they get here, and he would assemble them, using their press, because he can't find any rebuilt pumps.
