4030 Drawbar Load Control Shaft Shims

I have heard of shims to put at the drawbar to extend the life of the load control shaft oil seals at rebuild/replacement of the oil seals but can"t find them and my JD parts dealer dosent seem to know what I"m talking about when I asked about getting some. Any part # or where to find them? I assume they go between the drawbar frame and transmission case to stop the shuking? Thanks for any insight.

They are not a JD part. They are usually just are usually on a rack at a good dealership and they are called machinery shims. John Day company has them.

You want the saddle to move but with as little side movement as possible. This will help keep the load seals from leaking.

HUH, jdsmeller? Those generic suckers hanging on the racks at the dealerships (properly called machinery bushings) are, at the least, about .075" or more thick! (14 GA or thicker.) Some are .125" thick!

HOW is THAT gonna work to tighten up a small amount of side-to-side play of the drawbar yoke? Makes me wonder of you"ve EVER worked on any of the stuff you pose as an "expert" about?

Jdparts, which you and the original poster so graciously overlooked, isn"t a whole lot better, with the thinnest shim they list coming in at .036"!

However, by mixing and matching the three available shims from right to left, plus or minus the basic washers, R28961 (.060" thick), a guy should be able to git "er snugged up pretty good!

Shim numbers, R68425 0.048, R68426 0.036, and R68427 0.062 in thick. The bushing John Deere lists are still the old style, they don't offer the updated ones like for a 4020. chris

Well "BOB" they are called machinery bushings in the catalog. So you got that part right. The John Day salesman that stops by my shop calls them shims. He keeps my old rack stocked. So shot us both for not describing them to suit you!!!!

Look on page 366 in John Day's catalog. You can get them in 18ga.-.047, 14 ga.-.074. and 10 ga.-.135 .

On most of the tractors we have around here you can usually get at least one of the 18 ga. ones on each side. The older JD 3020 and 4020s usually need a little more.

As for the smarta$$ comments on what I have worked on or not. KISS MY A$$!!!!

The long and short of it is to keep the draw bar saddle from moving sideways and knocking out the load control seals. I don't care what you use for shims. Just get rid of the side movement.
