4240 Hyd problems?

I have a 4240 that has started a strange problem. When running the baler, with the PTO engaged it will kick the PTO out of gear when you shift the Quad Range trans. Perhaps too low of hydraulic pressure?

The hyd oil and filter was changed at the start of baling, less than 50 hours on change. The valve bodies on the left side where the PTO shifter and clutch pressure were replaced at the same time....Help!!!! Thanks...Ts

KISS formula- simple things first...follow the linkage, look for dirt buildup that interferes. Worn linkage, broken spring, vibration issues from shifting. Then go inside.

The actuating arm in the valve body can get warped or bent causeing it not to stay detented part # R 67981, it will eventualy not stay in at all, you will need to pull the clutch operating valve and disassemble it to get the arm out.

If after checking everything else for leaks or sticking valves. JD offers this pump kit to compensate for high hour transmissions with minor seal seepage.

The linkage and valve operating bodies were replaced about 50 hours, roughly 2 weeks back. It sounds like buickanddeere may have the answer with a high volume pump. Thanks for the replies...TAS

TAS,
SGB mounts can get worn causing changes in linkages. This happened to my 4255 and pto would not stay engaged. I thought it was the bent arm Tim referred to but pto still dis-engaged after R&R of arm.

Tim is right. Odds are your detent arm in your valve is sprung. A new one is not expensive and is much heavier built. This should solve your problem. You will need some o-rings and a gasket or two to fix this in addition to the arm. Mike

Insert lots of curse words here!!!!! today with the JD tech we pulled the filter and screen. It was pluged with brasss and fiber from what we guess was the clutch pack in the hi-lo pack in the Quad-range transmission. This ain't gonna be cheap. Thanks for the help...TAS

That's a lot of damage for a relatively "new" tractor.
Any chance somebody, sometime dumped in some kind of oil that wasn't JD Hyguard Trans Hydraulic oil or equivalent.
A trans hydraulic oil that doesn't say "wet clutch compatible" on the pail. Or ordinary gear lube will ruin the clutch friction material.

All work was done at a JD house, but no telling what happened before.

That's a great tip on the "Wet clutch compatable fluid" I try to stay all JD parts and fluids..Thanks...TAS

Water in hyd oil will deteriorate the brake linings also.

If it has brass shavings in suction screen I would suspect brake linings more than hi-lo pack.

It really does sound like the arm Tim talks about When that arm gets warped or bent every time you touch the clutch pedel it will pop out of gear . but if you aklready changed it then maybe its not the problem . Did it work for a while after arm and valve work .
