59 Oliver 550D Oil Pressure

Greetings!
I recently installed an alternator and pooched my oil pressure
idiot light. It was working properly before, turning off at startup
and while running, and slowly turning on during shutdown using
my two in line 6-volt batteries. Ill fix this later by first testing
the light, then replacing the oil sending unit I beat up upon
removal.
- installed physical line below oil filter, note picture
- upon starting and waiting a minute or seconds more and received no oil
pressure on gauge. Shut down
- checked dipstick. Oil surprisingly clean for 25 hours since
change.
- unscrewed physical oil line after shutdown and got a pretty
decent drip of different, beautiful, diesel-tinted black
- bought the pressure gauge, which goes to 80, here on YT
- Rotella 15w-40, right in the run zone
Thoughts on next step?
Thoughts on the difference in oil colors?

After reading a recent, frightening post on a TO-30 oil pressure issue,
I could use your help before taking the next step.

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Good call, thank you RT. I did just bleed it by cracking the fitting near the gauge. Did get oil at a fairly good clip before tightening the fitting back down. Ran it, shaking in my boots, for 2 minutes this time, though I did not get gauge pressure once tightened.

Brand new gauge bad? Time to try another. Ill report back

J., I believe I chose that oil based on one of your previous posts! Thank you

Did you replace a generator with an alternator?--If so, you changed the polarity from positive ground to negative ground. You will have to replace your cluster gauge also from a positive ground to a negative ground. HTH.

Good call
Korves hooked me up with one a month ago. I thought I had the change properly executed, as the temp gauge, fuel sender, and AMP light worked properly.

0-80 pound gage is a lot for one of those old Waukeshas. Might get 20 p.s.i. at full throttle. Your old oil light probably turned off at 7 p.s.i.

Like others have mentioned I dont think a 550 carries much oil pressure. I believe they are like an oliver 66 where the rod bearings have squirters to oil them so all those squirters cause a pretty good leak in the oil passages so the oil pressure just doesnt get very high. probably idling no more than 10 psi. Your 80 psi gauge will probably barely move at 10 psi.

How about a tractor serial number? Early550 tractors have lessoil pressure than later ones! My e-mail is open Send me an e-mail with a phone number and read the 2 posts below!.

Thank you Mr. Pollock and I550, I appreciate you sharing your
knowledge.

I happened across a post from Mr. Larry Harsin re: a pressure
regulating valve on the right side of the block under a 15/16
bolt. Sounds like there is a plunger and spring that may need a
little lubrication that might buy me a few more PSI.

Thank you again to all that replied. Regardless of if I have an
issue, I read these forums to learn from you every day. Cheers

That bolt as you call it has a 7/8 inch hex. Also I asked you for a tractor serial number. There is an early spring and a later spring. All I need is a serial number.to see if you have the light or the heavy spring. Send m an e-mail with that information. My e-mail is open. J.

I am sorry, I sent you an email via Classic this morning. I will try to send you one outside of YT. Thank you

Probably don t need follow up but maybe it s appreciated, I replaced the oil pressure sending unit and installed a proper pressure gauge (using a T-fitting under filter housing as J. has previously suggested). Light turns off at startup and gauge reads around 14 psi as it should. Thanks again to all for support!
