6 volt electronic ignition for 1948 8N Front Mt.

Can I install an electronic ignition on my 1948 8N 6 volt?

Thank you. I was told that the electronic ignition was only for a 12 volt system. Glad to know I can used it for my original '48 8N 6 volt system.

Must have a good starter and a good battery in the 6 volt system. I believe that the electronic ignition needs at least 4.5 volts for it to fire. I put one in a 8N Front mount distributor and it would not start till you let up on the starter. I installed a rebuilt starter and everything was fine. I sold the tractor and never heard anything about it.

KCTractors,I agree They need at least 5 volts while cranking over to signal the coil to fire.Any little thing can result in no spark,shuch as a weak battery,starter drawing to many amps,bad corroded wiring/connections or forgetting to bypass the OEM ballast resister.
In other words things need to be perfect for it to work,seen many who have bought them and had problems getting their tractor to run.

I have zero experience with EI on an 8N, but I do have EI ona 601 Ford. It is still six volt. It starts and runs well, but as others have posted the battery must be in very good condition.

EI works just fine on 6V's even down to 3.5V's why 3.5 that all the load I could put on the battery to pull it down while cranking the engine it fired off no problem plenty of spark... As far a condition of the battery that is also applied to a conventional system also... EI and a points system suffer from the same issues the diagnostic is pert neer the same :SHOCK:

I believe it has more to do with the coil I had one that did not fire well on EI but did on points it had a weak coil a coil that was on its way out EI are points had little to do with it...

If EI had anything to do with it, it is because EI dose not pull the coil down to zero V's like a points system does... EI pulls the coil down to 1/2 a Volt...
