8n live pto?

just read an ad for an 8n with a live pto option. I've never heard of such and was wondering what type info I be able to dig up. As always, thanks for your help.

It's rather rare.. and would be a manual pinion clutch.. IE.. throw the 'hand' clutch and the drivetrain freewheels while the pto and hyds keep going, untill you step on the foot clutch to shift gears / go to reverse..e tc.

make sure that is what they are talking about.. some unscrupulus people stick an over running coupler onthe rear and say it's like live pto (NOT!)

the NAA had a version of this that was hyd and ran off a small pump stubbed onto the proofmeter drive..

Tractor Supply used to sell a "Live Drive" attachment. It was a wheel mounted to the rear left of the tractor and activated with the hydraulic 3-point. When activated, the hydraulics would lower the wheel and raise the left rear tractor wheel off the ground. Thereby, stopping forward motion while running the PTO.
It was also advertised as an "overdrive". By raising the left wheel off the ground and locking the left brake, the differential action would double your ground speed drive on the right wheel.
Maybe today's safety standards aren't such a bad deal after all.

Not kidding. TSC 1957 Blue Book page 52, top left corner.
Also, hand clutch for Farmall H & M.
"for inexperienced operator, particularly for farm youths too small to reach the foot clutch"
"easy to control clutch and operate tractor while walking beside it"
"convenient for opening & closing gates without getting on & off tractor"
It must have been a time before TSC had attorneys.

Dearborn made them for the NAA...far as I know they would not work on the 8N:

BTW: Good luck finding one in operational condition!!!

I've saw one on an 8n but it was a 52 so maybe the later ones were different? Dunno. :?

Tim;
Yep I have the other four pages of that. If ya want them, shoot me an email, and I'll email them back as inserts to the email. They were downloaded as JPG's.(pic.'s)
I am using the modern forum, email is always open. Let me know when you send, as it may get caught by my trash bin.

(quoted from post at 10:30:46 07/10/09) Yes, the 8N could be fitted to one like the NAA ad GB posted.
AA doesn't have pump in belly, so more space for hyd clutch assy. 9/2/8N, maybe?

The PTO is not clutched, stays the same. The tranny output shaft has the slip clutch in line allowing interuption in power transfer to the diffy which results in constant PTO RPM while over the ground speed decreases as needed.

Yes, I understand. I was just 'suggesting' that because of the space taken up in the 8N by the hyd pump, that is vacant in the NAA, that maybe there was not enough room in the 8N for this new mechanism(hyd clutch on the driveshaft/coupler). The cutaways show why I suggested same. I'm not positively saying there is not enough room for it, but it doesn't look promising to me.

Ignore red arrow ahead of xmission, that is from another use of picture.

wow this question sure opened a bag of worms. All the info is greatly appreciated. That's why I love this site. So many people willing to share their vast amount of knowledge. Thanks again and best of luck to all.

I have seen ads on ebay for an ORC that say it will make your tractor act like it has a live PTO. Don't suppose that is what the tractor in your original post has?

Yes, there was a live pto option made specifically for the 8N. Needless to say, they are quite rare. The Barkleys (Don & Derek -Shelby, NC) have a restored 8N with one. You can contact him at a company called Just 8 Ns (all one word) for more details. I don"t recall whether the unit was made by Sherman or Dearborn.

There are pics on this board of them.

I spent about 10 min looking for them and didn't find them.

But they are here.

Not exactly rocket science. The transmission output shaft is coupled to the differential pinion shaft by a ~9" long internally splined driveshaft. Replace it with a clutch pack and you are done. The problem is that there is little room for the clutch pack - the belly pump occupies a LOT of the real estate you need. You have roughly 6" OD by 3" length to work in. Obviously a custom clutch pack could be designed to fit that space. Actuation is problematic - no live hydraulics for fluid actuation and limited geometry for a mechanical linkage. I"ve spent a lot of time in this area for a different application if you want more info. Personally I don"t think a live PTO is top of the list on design enhancements. Nor is it likely to be a big demand item - e.g. not going to pay it"s way.
