8N Not Starting

I had my 8n running a couple of weeks ago and then we got a sub zero cold snap this week. I cannot get the tractor to start. I put some gas line antifreeze in and a new 6 volt battery yesterday. I wore the battery down today and am trying to recharge it. I have a reverse polarity hookup (posative to negative, negative to posative) on the battery. When I hookup the charger pos to pos, neg to neg on the 6 volt setting, the needle reads around 9. The needle stays still on 9, like it should, for a few minutes and then starts to flicker like crazy. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas on what to do? I have gotten the tractor to start cold before but this time its being extra stubborn. Thanks for any help.

positive to ground? I hope so you will get better spark. Start with pto off and foot on the clutch..A block heater might help. Keep it in a barn?

Sounds like you have a bad battery on your hands. You should NEVER hook up a charger + to - and - to +. ALWAYS + to + and - to -. I know you said its new but now days new doesn't mean good

Buster...........you write......."When I hookup the charger pos to pos, neg to neg on the 6 volt setting, the needle reads around 9. The needle stays still on 9, like it should, for a few minutes and then starts to flicker like crazy. What am I doing wrong?".........'nuttin'.....yer doing yer battery charge EXACTLY CORRECT. (+) to (+). The flickering is internal overload reset of yer charger. Why is it overloading???........yer dead battery is suckin'up all the little amps yer charger can supply and overheating it.

Sounds like yer 6-volt battery charger is one of those weaksister 6-AMP'ers. Just letter stay connected and comeback tomorrow. Make certain yer battery caps are OFF and then tomorrow, re-cap and then WASH the top of yer battery OFF. Understand?

You write......."I have a reverse polarity hookup (posative to negative, negative to posative) on the battery".......I'm gonna assume that yer talkin'bout how yer battery is installed in the tractor.......while the 6-volt battery came POSITIVE GROUND from the factory, yer tractorial electrical system (when correctly polarized) works just fine with negative ground. There are some obscure reasons for positive ground but mox-nix.

OTHERWIZE.........iff'n talkin'bout how yer trying to recharge yer battery while in the tractor. DONT DO THAT..........respectfully, Dell

ALWAYS connect like polarities when charging and boosting.

Yor charger + to battery positive..and so on. If you have not done this.. be prepaired to buy a new battery.

Don't get confused about positive ground.. ground polarity is application specific.. IE.. whatever battery post polarity is tied to ground, is ground polarity.. etc.

good luck
