Got in to a discussion with a Ford expert yesterday. He claims a 900 series is the same tractor as the 800 series. Is this true?

That would depend upon how one defines same.

There are many differences between the 800 and 900 series tractors.

There are also many similarities.

The fundamental distinction is that the 800 series are utility tractors whereas the 900 series are row crop versions.

Just about everything behind the transmission except the lift cover, seat, wheels, and accessories is different.

Just about everything in front of the engine is as well, radiator and accessories excepted.

Another difference is on the 900 row crops (and the 700's as well) there were frame rails on the side of the engine to support the front pedestal while on the 800's and 600's the front axle support attached directly to the front of the engine with no additional frame.

And,
The differential on the RCs turns backwards compared to an all purpose.
Normally to pull the differential on a Ford you would remove the Left trumpet.
On a RC you would pull the right one.
