Last time around on this mowing job, got a little bit greedy and thought “ I can get one more swath.” Wheels started spinning and the tire treads started loading up with mud. I lifted the mower and took a sharp left turn, just barely got out. This is very close to the place where, several years ago, I found out that the dual tires don’t make up for stupid. Guess I needed a reminder.

Spring keep it wet or just low spot and loads of rain?

Always wet, run off from higher ground. Some years are worse than others. The first time I mowed it, was a really dry year, and I had no trouble getting over all of it. The next year I got around once and a half, and sunk. We came back with another tractor to pull it out, and there was a big frog sitting on the mower.

Ruts hold water. Won’t dry out , when it does can you plow out a ditch somewhere to drain it ?

My biggest problem is mowing pond banks when the water is low, like now. I use studded snow tire rears on my 46" riders and they do pretty good but I still get in some hair raising situations from time to time especially like this time of the year when the summer grass at the water's edge is tall and thick....makes for hard mowing and hides soft ground.

On one occasion (not anymore) I was using my 61" Ferris ZT, which weighs a lot....way too much for pond banks I found out. The mower started sliding toward the pond and I could do nothing to stop it. With me in the seat, it went into the water and was submerged (with half of me) up to the air intake cap on the engine....slope was about 30*. I was able to slip and slide and get out of the pond myself after the mower stopped rolling but had to go and get a tractor to pull out the mower.

I pulled it to the shop, pulled the plugs, let the water out that would drain out (not all that much) shot some oil in the cylinders, drained the oil and replaced it and the filter, popped the air cleaner and filter, no water inside. Took compressed air and blew out everything after removing blocking shrouds and all. Put the plugs back in with some starting fluid, hit the starter and it fired right up. That was about 12 years ago. Only thing that occurred as a result, after half a dozen years, best guess, was the starter bendix and starter shaft needed some lubrication. Otherwise no problems. Did I luck out......you betcha and I haven't been on a pond bank near the water since.
