B valve setting/timing

I have been trying to get my b to run better I decided to check the valves they were real loose so I reset them to 22thousandts cold with piston at tdc compression stroke and noticed that on the electric start flywheel the LH impulse is lined up with the 3 oclock mark on the case and that is when the mag clicks which I understand to be correct after setting the valves I noticed that as I roll the engine forward toward LH ex mark that the valve clearance opens up to about 50 thousandts before it starts to tighten back up again and the clearance does not come out of the rocker arm until the flywheel is about 2 inches past the 3 oclock mark so would I assume to have a bad cam or is there a simple way to check the cam to crank timing ?

remove rockers and pull out push rods, then re insert them to make sure they in are correctly. Set gap to .020, run it, then recheck when hot. When setting, Set the valves from flywheel side across, rotating engine until each valve frees one at a time.. wiggle each rocker to make sure the pushrod is reccessed all the way back before setting.

most of these old tractors have so much wear you can't set the valves that way. tighten them down and then back the nut off one flat. you can check it with a gague then but i think thats right.

A couple of us noticed the very same thing on our A model tractors - it's the way that they are ALL made. Normal instructions are then off base and don't take this FACT into account.

Set them the way you want to. I set them closer because I do have loud valve noise when set by the factory specs. When set for .010 cold I don't have the noise but do have plenty of slack for oil to get in there and keep things from galling. At some odd 540 degrees from TDC I DO have .020 clearance, it's just not where you would normally look for it. Everybody is included whether they know it or not.
