Belt Pulley Shaft Seat - '50 M

Has anyone replaced the belt pulley shaft seal on an M? After studying all of the various parts and service manuals, none of these sources seems to give a clear picture of the repair procedure. It looks to me that the pulley shaft, including bearings and the bevel gear might be able to be be withdrawn as an assembly straight out of gearbox housing. This would make sense for being able to set the gear backlash using the shim stack as would be normal procedure. Also, the IH Service Manual states: Upset hub of gear in 3 places to hold inner bearing in position. I don't see how this would be possible unless the whole assembly could be slid into place, complete. Further, the I&T manual says: Procedure for disassembly and reassembly is apparent after studying Fig. IH477 on page 75. Not so much! It would be really nice if the seal can be changed without removing the entire belt pulley housing from the tractor. If anyone can shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it! The whole belt pulley housing has to come off to get to the nut holding the bearings tight. Those threaded short bolt looking deals just need a nut screwed on to pull them. They are dowels for alignment. Then just take the bolts out of the edge with the 2 long ones in the middle have to be held up with a rubber band till you get it out. IT should come out without dealing with tank movement. We can pull the housing on OR MD without doing anything except holding those to middle bolts up from the threaded holes they set in after being unscrewed.

Thank you, caterpillar guy! I sure didn't expect to hear that you could get the whole pulley housing out without taking the tank off. Sounds pretty heavy but I guess I'm game. The seal on mine just developed a bad leak even though the pulley hasn't been run for at least 10 years, or as long as I've owned the tractor. In fact, the pulley unit didn't even have control linkage on it (and still doesn't). Guess that shows that the oil slinger in there works well. Looks like this is the time to get it all back and going again. I appreciate your answer!

Thanks 560Dennis, The lower left diagram from the I&T Manual that you sent is one I've been studying and attempting to clarify. It's the one that the text says that by looking at that diagram, the Procedure for disassembly and reassembly is apparent, but they seem to have overlooked some pretty big details. I appreciate your help! All grist for the mill!

I have two 1950 Farmall Ms and I have changed the flat belt pulley seals on both of them. I removed the shaft from the housing by unbolting the retaining plate behind the pulley and sliding the shaft with the pinion gear on it out. This way you can leave the rest of the housing on the tractor. You will likely need a press to remove the bearings from the shaft. They will need to come off to change the seal.

I have done this several times on H's and M's. The housing does not need to come off the tractor. Remove the pulley then remove the bolts behind the pulley and slid the shaft out of the housing. Then there is a gear and a couple bearing that need to be pressed off the shaft to reach the seal.

Thank you, newtatoobob and SinkholeRoad! That is just what I had surmised, but wasn't sure, after looking at the exploded view drawings in the various manuals. Makes perfect sense. I do have a press, so it should not be too bad a job. I appreciate your responses!
