Has anyone replaced the belt pulley shaft seal on an M? After studying all of the various parts and service manuals, none of these sources seems to give a clear picture of the repair procedure. It looks to me that the pulley shaft, including bearings and the bevel gear might be able to be be withdrawn as an assembly straight out of gearbox housing. This would make sense for being able to set the gear backlash using the shim stack as would be normal procedure. Also, the IH Service Manual states: Upset hub of gear in 3 places to hold inner bearing in position. I don't see how this would be possible unless the whole assembly could be slid into place, complete. Further, the I&T manual says: Procedure for disassembly and reassembly is apparent after studying Fig. IH477 on page 75. Not so much! It would be really nice if the seal can be changed without removing the entire belt pulley housing from the tractor. If anyone can shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks, Tom.
