Blue streak points

Just yesterday, I was at my local O'Reilly's and on the counter was one of those rubber like pads that have all sorts of products advertised on them and right down in the bottom right had corner were the words. Standard Blue Streak.
If it wasn't for CaryC's post I wouldn't have thought anything about it.

(quoted from post at 12:17:13 03/06/23) The problem you're having buying Blue Streak points is that your tractor is old, Blue Streak is an older brand name, most of us on this board are old, and the people you're trying to buy parts from are young and don't know about old parts and tractors.

Boy is that true! I went to a local parts house for points for my son's IH 674 w/the old points in hand to show. The young man asked what model, what year, & if it's gas or diesel!

I would expect their computer systems would be able to tell them youngins' what they need to know. As I said before, one guy I spoke to on the phone said he needed to know the engine displacement before he could even look anything up. I've had that tractor for over 20 years and even I don't have that piece of info rattling around in my head.

The auto parts supermarkets aren't the place to buy parts for an old tractor. The computer doesn't know anything it wasn't told. I'm lucky I still have an independent auto parts store and the owner still works there. He knows older vehicles and tractors and usually doesn't need a book or a computer to sell me parts for my tractors as he's done this so long. If you go to buy parts for an 8N and they ask you for displacement it's time to leave.

So, I guess you're telling the only alternative is to order something online and wait two weeks to get it?

I would prefer waiting, usually not 2 weeks, for the right part that is a quality part. Or I can waste my time attempting to educate the parts computer gazer, which by the way is a waste of time as they really don't want to be educated.

(quoted from post at 10:18:50 03/08/23) I ordered a set of nos FD-8081XV points on ebay on monday.
From Cal to Pa being delivered today.

OK, I see another set on EBAY but it does not say anything about what they fit. Does this set fit the 8N side mount dist?

I've had so many part number thrown at me, my head is spinning now.

My apologies woreout. Like I said, I've had so many part numbers thrown at me my head is spinning. I haven't started this 8N in probably a year and a half or maybe more. In the past three days I've made 6 trips into town to Napa for various other things. These trips are at least 25 minutes one way. I'm just a little disgusted with working on this thing.

Thanks JMOR for pointing that out.

his set must be super high quality...or maybe price reflects antique value?

I ordered a set of FD 8081XV from Ebay. Went to install them today and discovered that they were completely opposite to my old points. You see my old points on top in the picture below.

Come to check out the box and what they sent me was FD-8183XV. wish I would have checked them when I received them. But the Ebay ad showed the box with the FD 8081 xv part number.

That would be MADDENING!

On the other hand, most sellers of old and obscure parts have NO idea of what they are actually selling, they are simply liquidating someone's old inventory that may or may not be boxed or labelled correctly.

The same Ebay ad that I purchased from still lists them as FB 8081 XV. It even shows the end of the box part number as the same.

Luckily, I had a new set of Echlin points that I got prior to ordering those blue streak points so I installed the Echlin points and they are working fine. My 8N now will idle down to 400 rpm and just sit there chugging away now.
