Take the whole unit off, remove nut and drop down on a chuck of wood, may take a couple tries. Just hold the unit by the pedal and the main housing, not under drum.

Gonna have to get the hammer out and hit the end of the shaft by the nut, put the assembly back in with one bolt to hold it. Also just have the nut backed off a couple turns, so you don't loose the shaft inside.

This is one method that has worked on our Model 70.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the grease fitting(Key 17), lever shaft(Key 14), and cam(Key 27).

Grease/oil the lever shaft and make sure it moves freely.

This will help engage and loosen the brake shoes from the bottom if necessary.

Once the lever shaft moves freely, [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]tighten[/b:654c4848f0][/i:654c4848f0] the adjusting screw until it is snug.

Caution: do not over-tighten the adjusting screw.

This will expand the brake shoes from the top if necessary.

Place the brake drum face down.

Use your favorite penetrate [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]l i b e r a l l y[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0] completely around the edges to soak the brake pads.

Use a small hammer to [i:654c4848f0]tap[/i:654c4848f0] completely around the brake drum.

Repeat this process several times.

Once the brake pads have been thoroughly soaked with penetrate, [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]loosen[/b:654c4848f0][/i:654c4848f0] the adjusting screw until it stops.

Engage and disengage the lever shaft until the brake shoes move freely.

Place the brake drum face up.

Note the brake shaft with nut(Key 2) in the diagram above.

Use your favorite penetrate [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]l i b e r a l l y[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0] completely around the edges to soak the splines of the shaft and drum.

Once again use a small hammer to [i:654c4848f0]tap[/i:654c4848f0] completely around the brake drum close to the end of the shaft.

Repeat this process several times.

Install the brake assembly on the tractor.

While rotating the brake drum, use a small use a small hammer to [i:654c4848f0]tap[/i:654c4848f0] the edge of the brake drum until it comes off.

Hope this helps.

I leave the brake housing on the tractor, I have a long bar that is tapered down to a blunt point, install the bar threw one of the round
holes in the cast center of the rear wheel. Blunt point in the center of the brake shaft, & give it a hit with a 4 or 5# hammer. Bingo the
drum is loose. On a 50 the brake drum has to be off the shaft to remove the brake asy.
