Clutch problem

model 801 1959 gov. indust. ford tractor front end loader and backhoe. The clutch pedal was depressed for 2 yrs. so as to not let the clutch plate get stuck. As a result, everything works, but i cannot get it to move into gear. It appears the fingers may be stuck. I can see the spring as i depress the clutch. But it does not appear to move me into gear. I have attempted various adjustments on the clevis and the freeplay in the pedal itself to no help. Is there anything i can do. I have pulled the starter and attempted to spray different lubricant, but h as not worked. I have used the front end a back to move the machine a few ft., but that has not helped. Any suggestions short of splitting the machine. Thanks!!

Well, that sorta is a let down~! You block the clutch and still have issues.

My guess is that the shaft the TO bearing rides on is rusted, or there is dry lube on it keeping it from sliding. You should be able to pull the steering pedestal to gain access to it. There is a fair amount of removal needed. From memory, you need to unbolt the guage cluster sheetmetal, battery tray and steering linkages. Then you should be able to pull it straight up 5-6" to get your hand in there to wipe down or polish to get it free.

Thanks, I do see a lot of grease behind the starter on that shaft that you mentioned. I tried spraying it down with wd but cant really get to it. I will try cleaning that shaft and see how I make out. Are you actually talking about the bolts above the transmission gear box that house the steering wheel? I will look for directions in the manual. Thanks again for your time. That will be better than breaking it in half.

Yes. The casting that bolts to the top of the transmission, it's what also holds the steering wheel.

I would stop spraying lube in there or the clutch may start slipping once it engages. Probably would be smart to spray the disc and Pressure plate down with a couple cans of brake cleaner after you rid the housing of grease / oil.

There is a lot of stuff to take off, but less than a split.

Hope it works out for you.

Hi John,
I have a 1963 41400 4 cly diesel 4 speed with hi/lo sherman. I am in need of a clutch. I have been to the ford dealer and keep getting the 1 1/2" AG Tractor Clutch. I noticed your previous post about the heavier clutch and was wondering if you had the clutch number or the place in which you had got your. Thank you in advance, Keenan
