correct battery for Ford 2000

i have similar tractor. It has a no 24 battery. and it is plenty good, but i don't have much winter start experince. Tha big tray is for an oil burner.

Have replaced battery that came w/tractor w/same model over the years that I’ve had tractor, but w/ every replacement battery the $$ has gone up!

Buy the most CCAs you can fit on the tray and be done with it.

I switched to a group 78, which has side posts and swapped out the battery cables for ones with side mount ends.

Gas would be a 17TF - always wondered if TF was for "Tractor Ford." They are expensive - $170 or so and about the only place I could find one was at NAPA (NH dealer didn't have them in stock). Not a great deal, but if you want it to fit the tray exactly that's the one.

Some of the "gas" tractors have a shorter battery tray and will not take the 4dlt... It seems to be the european versions, but not sure. So be sure to check the battery tray first.....

All batteries have gotten crazy expensive. I just picked up a group 24 today, cheapest I found for a decent battery was $200. I had to do a double take at the time stamp when I saw somebody say $130 for a 4DLT.

Two or three years ago I went for a 17TF, $240, no way. got a car-sized battery from WM. That starter is the same one used on Ford V8s for years.

As far as I know, the gas 3 cylinder models all had the smaller battery tray. They came with the 17TF battery, not the 4DLT.

I get gas tractors all the time with the long tray. Occasionally with the short tray. I'll start looking at the serial numbers to see if I can find out who, what, when and where.

Parts pages say the gas 2000, 3000 & 4000 always had the shorter tray and the gas 5000 and all diesels had the longer tray:

Both of my Ford tractors take a 12 volt 4DLT. I recently bought one at our NAPA store for $195. Having several years of experience in working with electrical systems on automobile and farm equipment, I don't use car batteries on tractors because they will not hold up as long as the battery called for will. I always buy the highest CCA battery available for the application, whether it be car, truck or tractor. And I make sure I keep the cable connections clean and tight.

Off NAPA'S website today 4D LT $264.99. 17 TF $415.99. I had to replace the battery in my 4000 gasser last summer and I did not buy the 17TF like the one I took out I opted for something not quite so spendy. Don't remember which one I bought would have to go down to the shed and look. My local NAPA also sells Interstate battery's but apparently Interstate no longer offers the 17 TF.

Took johnnmr advice & bought battery w/largest CCA that fit battery tray! Southern engineered battery cables to fit terminals & cable tied battery to tray. Fired right up! Thanks for all inputs from all of you!

Group 65 batteries will fit in the short tray and offer plenty of good clearance
These are the batteries used in Ford diesel pickups, I run the 850 amp version in my diesels but the lower amp version will handle a gasser and cost less
Last Group 65 850 amp I got at WM was around $140 with 2 year warranty
