I have a David Brown 1212 about a 1976 model. The problem is my brushog will some times stop my pto. There is no grinding or anything it just stops. Is there any thing that is not going to cost big bucks,That I can do to fix this? I fear I'll have to replace the clutches.

hi poppy it sounds to me like its oil on the pto clutch disc it may be coming from the crankshaft rear oil seal its a rope type seal behind the flywheel if you aregoing to fix it yourself its the disc next to the flywheel it goes on one way only the centre hub on the disc sticks out more on one side if i remember right it goes towards the engine, when removing the clutch only remove the long bolts which sequre it to the flywheel, when you have gone so far it may be better to change the whole clutch.hope this helps.tom

thanks casestudy but if the clutches have oil on them are they not trashed then? or are they like the clutches in a older car tranny.

I would say you have a seal leaking in ether the pto input shaft or transmission input shaft. The oil from the rear main seal usually can not get on the pto clutch. There is a support snout for throwout bearing carrier, which has a seal in it for the transmission input shaft and o-ring around support carrier. Also o-ring to seal up pto shaft.

I would also check your release lever adjustment make sure it has some free travel. If its to tight it can cause this problem. Thad

hi poppy your clutch is a dry clutch oil is the worst thing you can get on it, i cant see oil coming from the pto input shaft as no db tractor have a seal for this shaft, it may be the o ring on the support for the shafts coming out of the transmission case but i doubt this,if the tractor has been standing for a while is there any oil drips coming from the clutch housing and is it like engine or trans oil or does the engine or trans need topping up with oil farily regularly. as thad said check pto hand clutch lever throwout bearing clearance. hope this helps tom

HI,poppy there is a seal on the pto input shaft part#k628123.Also transmission input has a seal behind the throwout bearing support. There is two different ones part#k623415 and k623430.Over the past 35 years I've had alot of seals leak in this area and put oil on the clutch.Yes,it could clutch adjustment. But if you remove the bottom cover and it has oil on it there is a good chance one or more seals is leaking.Yes,it could be engine oil leaking also, but it is unlikely to get on the clutch for it will run down behind the flywheel.Nothing impossible
