Trying to determine what is the difference between regular type s mortar mix, and type s mortar labled masons mix? Also any difference in the use? Looking to patch a few holes in a wall.

This is what I know,,,
Mortar mix is cement powder that is all PRE-Mixed, it comes with the sand in it, so you just add water to make the mix, normally 50 lb bag. used for brick or block setting

Masons mix is cement powder that you Have to ADD to it, the sand or what ever you want to make it a mix, rock, sand, to make a drive way --- normally 80 lb bag. used for side walk or drive way parking.

IF you want to just patch a few spots, you can get a Latex base cement patch in a can, and all you do is open the can and use it, works good, has the cement color like any other cement, if you want it darker, just add some dark cement color to it,

Hope that helps you,,,, good luck,,, zeke

I ran into this once and if I recall correctly, one has a higher concrete content (stronger) than the other. As I recall, what I did was add concrete in with the mortar mix to get the strength up where I wanted it because it was considerably cheaper than buying mason's mix. Hope this helps.

I work at a cement plant and I can tell you Type S mortar mix has nothing but the powder in it. You must add masonry sand and water to make your mortar mix.

Mason's mix I don't know but, I'd bet if you read the bag it already has the sand added, just add water.

Cement and concrete has a mixture of portland cement, sand, and gravel.
Mortar does not use gravel, just more sand, giving it a more spreadable viscosity.

A stone Mason would fire some that put gravel in his mix for block laying.

If you were mixing for a driveway it needs filler [Gravel}
