Farmall BN problem today

I have not figured this out yet but think it maybe a major problem!

I've had this tractor since late 70's or early 80's right now I can not find date on when I did a major over haul just guessing it was in the mid to late 1990's. By major overhaul I mean it was stripped down to bare castings from front to back!

Well today was using it to move a load of fire wood back to the wood shed from where I split it. I needed some gas for the splitter. Shut of the tractor and went in shed to grab gas can. When I went to start tractor it fired a couple time then stopped. At first I though it may be out of gas but checking that there was a couple inches above the bottom. Also noticed it seemed to be cranking a little faster than normal. Just for kicks I took the magneto/distributor cap off and hit the starter. Not good as the rotor is not turning!!!

As I did not feel like getting involved with major work decided to use starter to crank it over and move it into the shed, only 10 feet away.

A hot day and my energy level is too low to go any further right now. I'm thinking the first step when I have some ambition will be to pull valve cover and see if things seem to be working in there. Depending on what that shows will determine next step.

Maybe it just sheared the little pin in the distributor. I would take the distributor off first.

If the hand crank made it move,it can't be too major

I read that wrong too. He used the starter to move the tractor not the hand rank.

Maybe the cam gear came loose, That would make it spin fast.

Well got it part way apart today.

Short story is one of the weights came off the governor and locked it up and stripped a few teeth off the governor gear. Have not got the front cover off engine yet but can see one tooth is damaged on the cam gear. next project will be to drop oil pan and remove timing gear cover.

Been many years since I was inside the engine anyone know if it is possible to remove the cam with engine still in the tractor? Or might I be able to replace the cam gear without removing the cam? Like I said it's been something like 30 or 40 years since I had the engine apart!

The cam gear is pressed fit to the cam,you cannot remove it in the block. Need to remove the cam. Remove front cover and rocker arm assembly and pushrods. Use wood dowels that fit tight in the lifters to hold them up and then you can remove the cam and put it in a press to remove the gear. Other option is remove block and turn upside down so lifters will clear the cam lobes

Thanks! Not sure if I will be working on it tomorrow but the first thing will to get front cover off an check the crank gear as well.

Anyone here have some used parts to sell? Will need at the least the cam gear and the governor parts (gear and weights).

JP tractor in Missouri should have everything you need. I deal with John a good bit .

I think I will give the dowel idea a try, off the top of your head would you know what size I would need? Guessing I would think maybe 1/2 inch?

My energy level is not what it used to be before the accident so I apologize if I seem to be taking too long!

I wish I still had the energy I had back when I was in my early 60's. Back then I would not have a problem stripping a 16 cylinder Detroit down to a bare block (actually they used two V-8 blocks bolted together along with a two piece crank!)

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about clothes pins or something of that idea.

And like I said I'm not in the shape I was even 3 years back so don't be surprised if I don't get much accomplished this week. I still have some firewood that needs splitting and stacking. At least I can use the 2006 Ford Ranger to pull the splitter and fire wood trailer.

Well got the motor a little more apart. front cover off and rocker arms and push rods out.
Crank gear looks okay, but (there's always a "BUT" right? the key in the crankshaft for the
gear and pulley is worn where the pulley rides. Kind of surprises me that there is only a
set screw for the pulley. Especially as easy as the pulley came off with setscrew out.

Guess now I have to decide if I will be pulling the crank as I'm thinking I can't get the
crank gear off with the crank in the block. Unless someone has ideas on that!
