Ford 861 powermaster pops out of 3rd gear when applying the brakes?

Worn detente punger. Part labelled 10 in the parts drawing at the link below:

There are three of them, one for each of the three heights of the shifter. Since 3rd and reverse are the most used gears, the detent for that height usually wears out first.

If your lucky you may get by with a new plunger and maybe a spring. Some times they will wear a groove into the shift rail Which would require transmission removal.

Replacing the detent balls and springs MAY help a bit, but the symptom is caused by worn engaging teeth on the shift collars. In order to eliminate the problem completely, new shift collars will be required and these are long since NLS.
