freeze plug install

Got a 336D and the freeze plug behind the starter blew out. Bought a replacement and want to be sure to install correctly. A friend suggested putting a bead of permatex around the outside before insertion and once I put it "dome side out", ping it with a punch - in the center - to get it to "seat" tight? Thanks.

Dome goes in, I would coat with silicone. Which direction are the existing plugs? Many video's on freeze plug installation.
