Funk Governor Front Seal

Hello, good people -
I've recently acquired a '52 8N with a dealer-installed Funk 6-Cylinder conversion, H series. One really pesky thing I need to fix is the oil seeping through a badly-installed governor front seal (behind the pulley); I've had the governor off and apart, everything looks good - this tractor has a fairly recent engine rebuild, including the governor, but I noticed the seal body was banged up when I had the front casting off. It's not leaking from the governor body mating surfaces, it's where the pulley shaft comes through the seal, but danged if I can find this booger anywhere. Does anybody have a source/part number, PLEASE?

Since then, someone suggested I might find a suitable off-the-shelf replacement from someplace like NAPA; I've got the governor off again and later today I'll pop the seal out of the front casting to get dimensions from it and the hub of the pulley - has anyone here had any luck in finding a replacement seal?

Mark........not on Saturday. (grin)

While you might gitt lucky at NAPA by carrying all yer governor parts in, you'll gitt better luck at an "Industrial Bearing" house. (check yellow pages)

Let the industrial guys do the measuring, experience has its merits. Besides iff'n they do it wrong, you can blame them.........Dell

Hello Marc:

When I replaced the seal in my Funk govenor, I took front govenor housing and pulley to an indusatrial seal distributor here in Jefferson City, MO.

Counter person measured housing (seat for seal) and pulley (rotating surface to be sealed) and crossed matched in his books and came up with a seal that did the trick.

Sorry I don't have part number, but hopefully you can find a local store that can help.

Possibly, you could take real carefull measuremnets and provide them via phone to a seal distributor.

Hope this helps and good luck in your quest and Happy N'n, Charles

As already has been mentioned, look for a place that specializes in bearings and seals. All you need is the shaft diameter, housing bore diameter (outside diameter of the seal), and the width of the seal. From that a bearing and seal place can match one up. Use calipers when measuring, and not a tape measure. A place like NAPA might be able to do it if you find someone who is willing to take the time. Don't even try those discount parts houses. Bearings can be matched up this way too, though you will need to know what style of bearing you have (ball, taper, needle, etc.).

If anyone is interested, I've located two manufacturer/part numbers for the Funk front casting:

1) TCM DICHTOMATIK Oil Seal, p/n 22X35X7TC and
2) SKF Oil Seal, p/n 8516

#1 appears to be a metal body with a rubberized outer coating; it's presently in the Governor, which continues to seep oil, albeit slowly.
#2 is a metal body seal which looks identical to the damaged one I removed, and I'll install it this weekend. Both are rated High-Temp., both are identical in size.

My latest suspicion is I may have some fuel in my engine oil, due to it's thin consistency and odor. I will be changing the tractor's oil before I do anything else.

If the oil change/new seal don't improve the situation, I'm considering disconnecting the Governor from the tractor's oil supply.

I welcome anyone's thoughts and comments.
