I used to not mind the self-checkout as much since it was just an option. You could use it if you chose to. Now it's not much of an option anymore. There is only 1-2 lanes open with a cashier, and those have really long lines.
At the Walmart I go to, they tore out a bunch more of the traditional checkout lines to put more self-checkout stations in. When they did the renovation, I believe they made some updates and the sensitivity on the scanner is cranked way up. So about a third of the items I scan ring up twice, so an attendant has to come over and clear one out. It really extends the check-out time.

The grocery station took out 3 lanes and put in 2 self checkout lanes in place a few years ago.

They were so poorly used that a year later the self checkouts were removed, and left as empty display area.

Walmart has a self checkout area I think, but Im there so seldom Im not sure how much they are used.

Since they have to have an attendant at those self-checkouts anyway, why don't they just put them behind a regular register and let them do it?
I just think it's always ironic that those places have 10 or 12 checkouts, but only 2 or 3 of them are ever open. Fleet Farm is the same way.

I absolutely refuse to use those things. Ill leave a full buggy sitting there and walk out before I give a company as rich as Walmart free labor by ringing up my purchases. If they would give something like a 10% discount I would consider it. But Im not doing it for free.

I agree-if I have to wait on myself, I should get a discount. In Home Depot, I just act bewildered, and they have to come over and check me out anyway. Mark.

I leave my cart sitting in an aisle about 50% of the time in Wally World. I'm not on their payroll, nor do they give a discount for self-check as far as I know. TDF

I work in a grocery store with 8 self
checks. It's good for both customers and
employees.

Customers like it cause they can get in
and out faster with small orders as they
aren't stuck behind big orders. Plus our
cashiers are slow as molasses. Employees
like it because we aren't constantly be
bitched at customers about long lines. The
employees aren't the ones that can't hire
folks, it's the upper levels and they
aren't the ones catching the flak. But I
do agree there should be a 5% discount for
self service.

ou are already getting a discount. That is why you are at Wal-Mart instead of Kroger, Tom Thumb, Whole Foods, etc.

People like you are why prices go up. They have to pay someone to put stuff back on shelves. If you don not like there policy, Do not go there. They won't miss you.

I swore up and down that I never would go to a self checkout. After a few times waiting in line for a checkout person with the IQ of a turd wringing up 3-4 people ahead of me I was convinced. That being said, the self check is for quick low volume purchases. Its the self serving thoughtless me only ones with a cart heaped full in the self check that get me.

Was wondering HOW many of you remember the FULL GAS STATIONS ... same thing , all there is are SELF SERVICE ..

.. mark

Here in Mankato Mn. we still have a full service gas station. ,,,Hanks,,, Washes the windshield, will check the oil if you want. Go inside, no groceries. You can buy a Snickers bar, Quart of oil and some wiper blades inside. That's all. They will install the wiper blades. Father son team. They are always busy. Couple years ago they stopped posting their gas prices. To much hassle changing prices with that pole. I don't know how much higher their gas price is if any. I buy my kerosene from them only. They go into garage and pump the kero out of a 300 gallon barrel with a hand pump. Nice folks. Relative of my wife's.

An hard working cashier is moving tons of products a day and will have back or columns problems soon or later. The constant column twisting is not good for you.
So it is safe to say that the self checkout is better for their back, plus it is quite quicker.
Do they still have plastic bags at walmart? I cannot understand how Americans stick to them polluant throwmeaway things. So much easier and faster to get big solid cloth bags and put your groceries in. Much faster unloading from the cart to the car, and from car to shelves.

Walmart is like any other store you go to. most of them are so big, you get tired, by the time you get out, it is easy to get distracted, and lose any manners a person might have. workers are people too; they are all there to help you. Try working there a while. you will probably change your mind.

We don't mind self check out, face it, they can't hire enough help. We buy most of our groceries at Aldi's, they only have regular check out lanes, and the employee is super fast. We like that place!

The Walmart I use remodeled and now has two self checkouts and seven employee operated ones. Of course there is only one employee checkout (with tobacco products) open, sometimes there are two but not often. You have to search real hard to find any employees in the store if you need help. The sign claiming that they will open another checkout if there are more then three customers in a line is still up. I have the phone number for the store in my phone and am not shy about calling them while standing in line to remind them.
