Gator gear grinding...normal?

I have newly aquired a JD HPX Gator. When shifting from neutral to either forward or reverse the gears grind (like shifting an old pickup without pushing in the clutch). If I slow down the engine idle, by pulling on the choke, I can get it shift okay. I am new to the gator world but I assume this is not normal. Since there's no clutch I'm guessing this should work like an automatic transmission and slide nicely into gear.

Is there an adjustment for this? Thanks.

No syncro and straight cut gears.
If idle speed is a little high, the driver impatient or the clutch slides dirty/dry. She's gonna growl.

Don't get in a hurry to shift. I have one that I purchased in 1994, seven grandchildren have learned to drive on it, 2 sons used it to deer hunt and I use it everyday if nothing just go down to the barn to look at the old tractors. Never failed to crank instantly and have piled dirt on the bed till no more would stay on it and it carries it like nothing back there. Would upgrade to a new one, but still have those Grands driving so think I will wait. Harley

Step on the brake before shifting and make sure you are not rolling. It does not have straight cut gears, and there is no clutch to be dry or dirty. There is a shifting mechanism inside the transmission, but most of the work is done in the transaxle part. By stepping on the brakes the transaxle should be stopped and then shifting will be normal. With those gators being fuel injected the idle is a little bit higher than the older carburated engines. The idle is set with a fluke meter to be done correctly. A little finesse and getting used to it will make all the difference in the world.

I just test drove the first one in Virginia. My neighbor is a John deere salesman for the local dealer. He just brought home the new XUV825I Gator. 50 HP 45MPH That thing is nice. Rides really smooth.

mine also does! had the tranny rebuilt still does it, if i can get mine to idle way down it will shift without grinding, but it seems like i got into the habit of just turning it off when i shift the gears

What do you call this on an HPX ? Looks like a clutch to me.
