getting screwed!

I have a friend and he is 88 years young. He is spry as can be and a lot of fun to be around. In 2008 I went to S&H equipment in Lockwood Missouri and bought a haybine from them, If any of you have ever been there you know this is no fly by night outfit, as a matter a fact they are probably one of the larger equipment dealers in the state. While I was there my buddy saw an 830 John Deere diesel tractor with a loader that was being worked on in the shop. This tractor looks to be about the same as a 1020 utility tractor and is a nice compact size tractor. He took a shine to it and bought it. He had not used it at all till last fall and it started to knock so he shut her down and took it to a local mechanic to fix over the winter. This man is a top notch mechanic and when he got into it he found a broken crankshaft, this was caused from Number one bearing being put in wrong and the crank was oil starved. We went down there today to see if they would help pay for some of the expense, they pulled up the work order which stated that the motor bearings had been inspected and new pan and timing cover gaskets installed. The run time on the hour meter from when it left there to today is 1 hour. What we asked for was $750 for a used crank and bearings, the answer was a flat no! When asked why there had not been any hours put on the tractor between 2008 and the fall of 2010 my friend then informed them that he owned 22 running tractors. They said the time lapse was just too great for them to help him out. I have purchased about 10k in equipment from them in the past and I have friends and neighbors that have bought alot from them too, but I am done with them. I am tired of getting screwed every time you turn around. One other thing that I can not get into my thick skull is how do you check mains and rod bearings without removing the caps?

Animal, I have been told that you can find ab bad bearing by dropping the pan and using a hammer tap on the bottom of the caps. A hollow sound means bad and nonhollow means good. Don't know if it works haven't had the opportunity to test it out.

Also I'm with you, if a dealership is not able to stand behind their work I go some place else.

Best and also the worse way to sell your business is word of mouth so just put out the word about the place and they may notice something is wrong I know I have seen more then one place close down because of that

That proves your never too old to learn a lesson and run the equipment before you buy and use it afterward. S&H is a highly reputable company, I doubt they will worry much about what a couple crybaby pikers think or say about them.

Time lapse or not, I'd go back and speak with the owner or general manager if you havent all ready. If they offer to do something, great, if not, so be it. I've got a really convenient farm supply store close to me yet I drive 11 miles out of my way to go to a different one over 36 cents in sales tax. Never, ever again will they get one penny of my money. Sure, I waste a lot of gas but that 36 cents cost them a 30 grand sale on water tanks, pipe, and related materials last year alone. I can stand it if they can. I didnt get out of line when I talked to the owner, and neither did he. He stated his position and I stated mine. He wouldnt budge so I thanked him and havent been back.

Same way with these guys. You cant educate someone who doesnt want to be. If they have enough money and enough business that they dont need you alls then let them keep it and be d---ed as my dad was so fond of saying.

Looking at this from an ex-service managers viewpoint I hrs use in nearly TWO years of ownership would be very questionable because it would be no hard trick to reset the hour meter. Most warranties have a time limit.

I find it hard to believe that a 3 cyl crankshaft would break from an oil starved brg.

Me too. On my rebuild I paid a boat load for on my IH 464. After a year I had to pull the head off and found a burned out valve and seats not machined. the walls are not properly scored either. Guess that is another $5000 grand out the window. If is like you have to be so careful who you hire for a mechanic. Post something happy, no this reminds me of how ------ off I am about that tractor.

Ya Jim, I know that it is hard to believe but that is the solid truth. The old man has 22 running tractors and why he bought this one at the time floored me. The crank broke on the number one throw. The bearings are off set drilled and I think who ever did it just switched the rod and cap bearing around..The fellow that fixed it for him is so good that when the local Deere dealer gets stumped they call him in for advice. But I understand your point how would the service manager know.

I did exactly that, they did offer a cup of coffee though. No harsh words no punches thrown, but I will never darken their doors again!

You are not the only one they have gotten to. My neighbor spent $70,000.00 just last February on a new tractor and had bought another New Holland tractor from them in the past with owning two New Holland balers and two discbines. They stuck it to him on a new hydraulic pump and a reseal job on the front axle on the older tractor. Still didn't have hydraulics after he got it home. Called and they sent out a mechanic who changed out a brass sealing washer in about 15 minutes that was the problem. It only cost him a $2700.00 bill. It didn't need the hydraulic pump and they more or less said TOUGH! It only took them 27 shop hours to do this. The pump is external so a fairly easy job. You are not the only duck in the puddle! Their shop supervisor is not too sharp in what dealing we have had with him. I will say they have good parts people.

Yeah, we need some happy thoughts, I'm riled up too. Every botched repair job that I got to pay for twice and every shop that hasnt honored an ag sales tax exemption. Got my teeth on edge all over again, lol.

Come on now, You two hay makers ought to have a smile on your mugs....The grass is getting greener every day and that good grass means money, and thats something we all could use. One of these days when my rich uncle gets out of the poor house I am going to come and visit both of you and see how this hay thing is supposed to be done. I have a fellow pressing me on this SEA-90 stuff, he is not organic but he raises brome hay over around Manhattan Kansas and swears by the stuff. I am thinking about getting enough to try on maybe five acres and see how it tests compared to the other. Have you heard of it?

Friend had an international diesel tractor that was getting hard starting and losing power. He had an IH dealer overhaul the engine, cost him 2 grand. The tractor ran about the same.I looked it over and I couldnt see where it had been apart.Friend got a job teaching at a high school that had a good auto shop.Shop teacher had him bring the tractor in .The shop teacher said the engine had not been overhauld at all and it was pretty well worn.Friend paid for the parts, labor was free.Tractor ran fine after that.Ive got a better one.My nephew was in high school. His brother in law bought a new Ford Ranger pick up.He had it back to the Ford dealer many times because it ran lousy and had no power.Brother in law sold it to my nephew for the balance he owed,800 bucks.Shop teacher listened to the engine run and said lets put it through the shop. When the boy got the pan off the was NO cap on #2 connecting rod.No nuts and no cap in the pan.Shop teacher offered Tim 2 grand for the truck when they got it back together.Tim took the money and bought a small dump truck.Tims a contactor now with many men working for him.The snows gone in the fields now and the fences are a mess, wire down, insulators pulled off.Ive got to slack off on the forum now.Been getting some crap from posters lately.Dont need it ,rather go fishing.

son bought a new pickup few years back,no time trans. acting up carried to dealer, they pulled pan waved magic wand over it,2 weeks later same problem carried back service manager told him his rough driving habits was the problem done an magic cure week later same problem he told service mans boss about the problems an what had been said, told them he wanted it replaced they patched again, didn't get home before it started again, carried to another dealer, next dealer told him they had to try to repair it he agreed got home same problem called them told he wanted a new trans. they told him the could only install a factory rebuild ,he told them that he didn't buy a used truck ,he wanted a new trans.because they could not solve the problem they said that they didn't install new trans. under warranty factory rebuilt only, in about 15 latter he came by the house sounded like a loaded grain truck coming out of the field, when he came back in the yard i asked what was wrong, his reply was nothing but the motor over powering the brakes in drive they will have to replace it now, they did, problem solved no more trouble with the trans.,they could have done that long before

I do not understand your problem but hey get off your high horse and PLEASE leave me alone if all you can do is try to cause problems. Grow up and be mature or do not answer my posts

I think I saw it advertised, let me know if it works, looking for anything to cut commodity driven fertilizer prices.

LOL, it is a better day. Either that or maybe its the fresh coffee. You are welcome to come visit any time!!! As to the product you mentioned, Im not aware of it.

Gordo, be careful what you say to him! He may threaten your life as well! Im so scared to even respond to your post, that Ive got the cops riding by as we speak in case he comes down here to shoot me!

I have an uncle who bought a used Chevy with a 350 still under factory warranty. After about a month, it started missing. The dealer would throw a tune-up at it, and it wouldn't do any good. When he finally blew up on them, they tore it down and found bad rings. They said it was out of warranty, so even though it was an ongoing problem, they wouldn't cover it. He hasn't owned another GM product since.

He bought a used 98 Cummins a few years ago and had trouble with the OD and torque converter lock-up. Had the transmission rebuilt twice, the transmission replaced, the computer replaced, and it changed nothing. He finally went to another dealer who told him there was a TSB on it, that a wire goes bad in the TPS circuit, and a piece of X gauge wire run between the pin at points Y and Z would fix it. Sure enough, he did that and it was fine. He went in and in an angry tone, let the general manager of the first dealer know about how he had been taken to the wringer over a 3 dollar piece of wire, and what he was willing to do about it. And ended up getting 2/3 of his money back.

Nationwide insurance, when I wrecked my truck last winter, called and asked for the bank info so she could get the payoff info to put a value on it. If I wasn't high on percocet at the time, I would have caught it and told her that its value had nothing to do with what was owed on it. They low-balled me on the price they'd pay, and I had several dealers tell me that they would jump on that truck if they could have bought it at that price. They were trying to get me to buy "gap" insurance on the next vehicle. When I walked into the insurance agent's office here in McCook when I needed a new policy, I told him I don't care who it is with, as long as it's not nationwide. I'm the third person in my family they have screwed, and once my grandma dies, they will not have the opportunity again.
