Ground speed

Is there a product available to accurately show ground speed. Not looking for tire speed or a $4000 data logger, just a single purpose tractor mounted speedometer. I have heard stories of a laser system, but have not been able to find one.

try getting a handheld GPS from walmart. they should be less than $100 and the compass screen has ground speed in tenths of a mph

Garmin eTrex. I have one that I stick to my dash with velcro. Affordable, works great as long as you are outside and not under a bunch of trees. My club uses a speed board at the end of the track too, but I don't like the amount of delay it has in updating.

I'd guess if you're one of the folks out there with the "smart phones" you could probably get a gps application for it as well?

hold on guys are you saying that this e-trex will give real time mph while your pulling down the track if so is it big enough to read easy or is the readout small ?

The speed read out numbers on mine are about 1/4 inch tall. Not big, but I don't have any problems, if you wear bi-focals it might be a problem. It also has a backlight for night time use. As far as real time you can tell there is a tiny bit of lag, but its every bit as fast as the radar systems used on farm equipment. I've also used my eTrex to calibrate speedometers on tractors and combines at work.
