Help Removing JD 530 Engine Head

I am trying to remove the head off my JD 530. I have all 8 nuts removed and the head is not coming loose. Some of the bolts (studs) still have part of the lead washers that pressed into the threads. Could this be the problem or does the gasket dryrot and help hold thing together? Whats the best way to separate it from the engine with out damaging anything? Also what is the torgue and sequence for the head nuts and the intake/exhaust manifold bolts when I put it back together. Also should I use gasket sealer (like permatex) on the head gasket and manifold gaskets when I put things back together? And any other cautions or tips to make sure I do everything right will be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot in advance...Charles

Hi JD B Puller...You're talking to a dummy here. Are the two extra bolts the ones I see that hold the valve rocker arm shaft? I did wonder about them but when I checked the parts manual it showed they are 9/16" X 2 3/4" long bolts and in no way be long enough to catch the cylinder head. Thanks Charles

Here's a crude diagram of where the studs/nuts should be. The x's represent the nuts.

Look at it again. Two long nuts and eight small nuts, 10 lead washers come in the kit, and there are 10 holes for studs in the headgasket. Parts book can tell you a lot!

Many times you have to persuade the head off of the studs with a piece of oak 2x4 block and a mallet.

not trying to start anything but why would you try to pull the head with the rockers on ??/ just curious thats all....thanks ...Kent

Kent, This is my first time doing any engine work on a JD 2 cylinder...so the answer to your question is that "I'm not sure what the hell I am doing" (notice I don't have as big an ego as some guys). This is a hobby I am pursuing since I sold my business, so I have the time and funds to learn as I go. If I screw up I'll start all over again till I get it right. I figure this forum is to ask questions to solve problems and help someone when you have the answer. I've been one who was never afraid to ask questions.
Actually I've always taken the position the only dump question was the one you are afraid to ask. Thankfully, there are some great guys on here who take the time and share their knowledge. How about you, how did you on your first engine job?

Get all the books you can get your hands on. Operators manual, parts manual, service manual. I don't think Deere ever offered a service manual on the 530 so an I & T manual is still helpfull.
Deere also offers very good seperate service manuals on the power steering, hydraulic, and carburetor systems.

there are 2 bolts under the block to the main case & 2 bolts from the block to the lower front frame all these come out from below!!

They printed a tech manual for the 520, and it is listed as the same one for the 530, since the engines are the same, save for the sheet metal. The service manual is SM2008.

For some reason I thought I had ordered all the ones available many years ago ? I might have to just order some more ? And this fellow should too !

you did right by asking...my first overhaul was on a 9N Ford in 1961 [ I was 13 yrs. old at that time]& I put the rings on it without looking to see what side went up or down ...it ran but smoked about as bad when I got through as it did when I started..LOL..take care & thanks for the reply...Kent...by the way I also have a 530LP

Thanks Mike, You were exactly right...the last two bolts are hidden inside the rocker arm assembly casing. Once I removed the rocker arm assemblies I clearly saw the two remaining bolts. Thanks again Charles
