how many foot pounds

That is sort of like asking how much does it take to push a car 10 feet. It depends on many things. When I rebuild and engine if I can turn it over by hand I know I didn't do it right. I when I build an engine build them tight and have yet to have one not ogo for years

Rich, He is probably asking because he needs a way to double check his overhaul or just to make sure he didn't switch a main cap or something else. That said when we build automotive engines I use 25 ft. lbs. max of turning torque on a shortblock not breakaway torque. Hope this helps. Gerard

If I remember right, on a big block each piston all made up on the crank added about 3 to 5 ftlbs. So on a fully assembled V8 the torque would be about 30 ft lbs. What I've done is take the first piston and check the torque to roll the crank a couple of full turns and each piston after that should be very close to the same. Any difference needs to be looked at.

I have not seen that spec in any of my manuals on this engine. If when assembling the engine you are turning the crankshaft over after each step you will feel the extra drag after each step and will know when you had no change or more change than the other steps. Steps meaning after the torquing of each main. torquing each rod bearing with out rings on the piston and then with the rings on. This will drop some jaws but for people that have never shimmed rod or main bearings it is best to not have the rings on the piston until after you are sure the rods are shimmed properly without drag with the bore for the rod bearings being oblong. An extra step but takes the (I wonder why) that I read several times a year on this and other Allis Chalmers sites. I read many times (is it the rods or the rings that is making it tight?) Why cause the question in the first place when an extra step will tell you at the time. When you are at the point of the question you will need several more steps to make sure you have it correct.

G I know this engine I have sitting behind me here in my office is going to take a good bit more then that to turn it over when I am done with it. Chev 292 bored 60 over crank turned 10 under, will have a cam in it if I remember right a 204/208 heavy duty valve springs etc etc. Should spin over the rear tires under that 1951 Chev and may even have to add wheelie bars to it

i check each time i add a piston/ rings/ and rod bearing... under 20 ft pounds total to ROLL, not to break away, is correct for 4 cylinders. I normally chech with the rod bolts 1 turn loose, then again after torque, just to be sure.. you would be suprised houw much drag you get on new rings in a honed cylinder bore.
