ok guys Im gettin ready to put the ol girl back together but I have a horrible manual...I didnt know if you guys could give me a lesson on how to time the tractor...the distributor is off the tractor so I need to start from scratch...any help is appricated...thanks!

Are you just talking ignition or the cam and crank as well? First of all, all model 70 tractors when new had a mag. So timing marks for the ignition are a ll for a magneto. Now you need to help me a little, is this a Delco or a Mallory distributor? Is it a 3 gear or a 5 gear engine?

Sorry about the confusion, I am just talking about the ignition system. It is a delco distribuitor but someone has changed it to a coil. The tractor is actully my cousins and Im trying to help him out, he got the tractor in a basket pretty much so its difficult to put stuff back together(seeing as Ive only delt with Farmall). His poor excuse of a manual did mention something about timing marks on the flywheel but that was about it. Its a 44 70RC if that helps, and like I said its got a coil(if that changes anything) Thanks!!!!

All distributors use a coil somewhere. Now: Clean the flywheel and lay out about 20-25 degrees on the flywheel before top dead center. I would make a marker every 5 degrees and paint the lines you stamp there each a different color unless you have a number punch set and then I would still paint them. You do remember basic high school math on how many degres in a circle and how to lay them out, Right? Does you intake manifold have a 1/8 inch pipe plug in it right above the carburetor mounting flange? If not it would be wise to drill and tap for one. More questions? J.

why would I drill and tap a hole in the intake??...what is its purpose???...my biggest question is this...to time it I bring #1 to TDC and then what?...drop the distruitor in the housing and have it so the rotor will contact the #1 plug wire??...I guess Im just confused on why I would mark the flywheel like you explained...Im not doubting your method in anyway but Im still not clear on this...sorry for all the silly questions...thanks

You have the basic idea. Bring it up to TDC #1 compression stroke. Then put the distributor in and rotate it so the points just start to open on #1. The reason for the degree marks is if you want to use a timing light to final time it your mag mark will not work so you need to provide a reference. The advance on the distributor will be different than the impulse angle on the mag(mag mark on the flywheel. The reason for the pipe plug is so you can use a vacuum gauge to fine tune it when you are finished and want to have it running at the best point.More questions? J.

That vacume thing peaked my interests for my 1600. About what kind of vacume would a guy look for? I've got a vacume gauge somewhere, I may have to try to find it and hook it up...
