Idle Blurbing

My '51 N starts and runs perfectly. The distributor assembly and all internals, coil, plugs, etc. are all brand splinter new parts. The carb has been overhauled and the fuel tank cleaned.

Only one problem continues to rear its ugly head - at idle, the exhaust note gives the occasional odd miss or bubble - almost like it's runbning too lean - which it's not. I've checked the entire intake circuit for leaks with propane, and nothing shows up.

I can get this engine to idle well gelow 400 rpm. It ticks off just like a good Ford flathead should - except for the occasonal exhaust blurb.

Any of you wise men ever find a solution for this nagging little problem? Sure runs sweet. Wish I could just get it to even out a little better.

Your suggestions are welcome,

It maybe with the govener. balls are starting to develope flat spots. What happens if you rich'in it up a little?could be a worn lobe on cam or worn tappet. Then agian 400 rpm at idle sounds kinda low, I dought if any of my fords will idle that low.

400 RPM is easy and common. I just adjusted mine down to 350 today after I recently had the carb rebuilt. I've always had it at 350 or so.

Sounds like mine, little "burps&poots"every so often. From what I've seen, that's typical, almost all of the old machines are like that. There was a post not long ago about that very subject.---lha

WHY don't you guys go WORK your tractors instead of obsessing about how slow they'll IDLE?

Or are you ex Johnny Popper "slow racers"?

Hey there BOB GUY You jess don t unner stand. It is a gas savin feature You put it on idle when you ain t pullin nuttin but yer goin fas and wanna sav gas. Ever thing has its reason ya see. Devious

Hi Greybeard I apologize for my attempt at humor on your idle problem I don t think I need to be doing that when some one has a problem and I won t be doing it again. Its a stupid thing to do for a grown person to act like that when it is of no value whatsoever. Devious in Humble Tx

Dev,

Don't get your knickers in a knot just yet!

The only problem here is that the 'net doesn't convey facial expressions very well!

If you could have seen me face-to-face while I was posting that you would have realized I was laughing and just josh'in you guys a little over the fiddling around with the idle problem.

Sometimes (IMHO) it gets a little TOO stuffy and serious around this place and it was a (FEEBLE) attempt at humor!
