IH 444 with unknown loader??

I have not checked the return line, but I will look at that first. I have tried the wide open start and get the same results whether wide open or limited throttle. Again thanks for the help.
 
Well, the only line I see as the return is at the top of each injector and return fuel to the front part is the injection pump. I don't see a line going back to the fuel tank itself from the injectors. Am I missing something?

I keep playing with it, good squirting pressure at the lower bleed hole, but just drips out the injector lines at about a drop per 1-2 seconds. I expected more since my 276 seems to flow much faster when bleeding.

I grabbed some compressed air so I'll pull all the injector lines tomorrow and make sure they aren't blocked. Started raining on my so I called it a day

If still no start after checking the lines, I may pull the top cover on the injection pump to look at the cut off mechanism. Is it possible that the cutoff is still sticking slightly meaning I'm not getting full flow to the injectors?

I like that it's making me scratch my head. By the time I'm done, I'll know this fuel system backwards and forwards, lol.
 
Well, one step forward and two steps back....

I pulled the side door on the injection pump and it looked pretty good to have been sitting. Nothing brown or crusty so I flushed it out and then closed it up.

I then removed the top cover to see if the cut off was hanging. I found it was a little stuck so I working the metering block back and forth until it was more free. I then checked the throttle and then the cut off to make sure I had it inserted correct. I closed it up and then started bleeding again.

I got fuel to all the injectors so all was positive. I then hit the glow plugs for a minute or so, and then it tried to fire once then nothing. I started working the things back, and I found no fuel was coming over from the lift pump. To make things short, I stated pulling lines to blow out and made my way back to the tank since every line was empty.

I pulled all the metal and unbolted the tank as I suspected the lower valve was plugged since nothing was coming from the gravity feed line to the filter. As expected, the tank outlet was plug with a bunch of junk. It flows well now, but I'll start flushing the tank tomorrow to get it cleaned out. Then back to putting it all together, and then bleeding again, lol.

Pretty soon, I'll know every inch of the fuel system. The only thing I haven't pulled is the injectors so once all back together that will be the only thing left if it doesn't start. We'll see...

Well, build has slowed down as right when I thought it was going to start nothing happened. I began looking and found no fuel to the injection pump. The issue was traced back to the fuel tank lower valve being plugged.

I removed all the metal, pulled the tank, and then spent the day flushing it out. I found a 12 inch stick in it around 1/2 inch in diameter. I guess I know where the junk was coming from that plugged the valve.

All cleaned, I stated putting things back together. That long line from tank to the fuel filter was frustrating, but I finally got it. Then starting pouring fuel in, and the same long line was leaking fuel. I thought the leak from before was at the lower tank valve so I wrapped the threads, but nope it was a pin hole in the line. Jeez

I ordered some NiCopp to bend some new lines. It will take a few days to deliver so I'll do some other stuff I've been ignoring to work on the 444. Lol
 
Well, new line delivered and I got it all bent up from tank to fuel filter. All good there, no leaks and flow is back to normal.

Reconnected line from filter to injection pump, and opened the lower bleed hole. A bit of cranking and fuel was spraying out. Started on the injectors, and I got two of the four to flow well. The last two never got fuel. I chased the lines back to the injection pump, and there is no fuel coming out there either. Very odd, it's like the pump is skipping the 1 and 3 injectors.

I had ordered a reseal kit for the injection pump so it looks like that will be next on the "to do" list. i'm still perplexed why I'm not sending fuel to 1 and 3, looking at the videos if the o-rings are bad in the pump it should be affecting all cylinders.

It still fires right off with ether so I'm still chasing a fuel problem. The only thing I haven't done yet is tackle the injection pump so we'll see how that goes.

I had pulled apart the CAV pump to clean and reseal, and it seemed to go pretty well. I got the rollers free so they seem to do their part moving in and out for the plungers. I did soak it some in diesel to help get all the crud out, but I'm happy to see it's clean now.

I went through the rest of the pump, and I didn't run into any trouble other than reconnecting the spring under the top cover. The metering valve and all works freely now which it meant before.

Now all put back together on the tractor, I left the lines off the injectors so I could check to verify all cylinder see some fuel.

Imagine my suprise when running the starter, I never got fuel out of the bleeder. I pulled the side door off and it was dry inside. Now I'm drawing a blank since it always pulled fuel before, but the plungers weren't doing their thing.

No pieces were left over, and I took pictures as I took it apart so all went back together like it came apart.

Kinda stumped at the moment, any thoughts as to what I need to check? I'll go back through the fuel lines just to make sure they are free, but otherwise I guess the pump is getting disassembled again...😵‍💫
 
OK, the ones we had in Canada had a lever on the side of the lift pump that you used to fill the fuel filters and prime the CAV pump.

I wish, that could have made things easier...lol

I'm going to pull off the inlet to make sure I didn't do anything wrong there, fuel is in the tank and filter so it should be pulling fuel unless I have a blockage.

Looking over my notes and the videos posted, not sure what else could be going on.
 
Well, I've been going through the parts diagram and I did miss a seal. I didn't notice one when I disassembled it, but it could have dropped and I didn't notice it.

I didn't use #19 when assembling, and I'm sure that plays a role in building vacuum to pull fuel.

Well, I pulled the fuel inlet off to add that gasket ring I forget, duh. Once all back together it started pulling fuel and bleed easily out the lower bleeder. Then nothing ..

It's the same as before, I'm getting nothing to the injectors so I pulled a couple of lines off and nothing even squirts out. Very disappointing.

I'm guessing the plungers are stuck again or I never got them truly free. I didn't disassemble the main pump body, but it appears that's my next task.

Anyone have a link to a good video on disassembly? Special tools needed? When I had it out I noticed the weights(?) any the rollers so I'm sure they need to be placed back in the correct spot, but I'm not sure if anything inside where the plungers are is critical as well.

Or if special tools or specs are needed, could I could find someone to just ship the body to for disassembly and unsticking the plungers? The rest of the pump has been sealed so I plan to just pull the pump body itself rather than the entire housing unit this time.
 
Well, I shipped the main pump body off yesterday to be disassembled and gone through so those plungers will be unstuck and cleaned finally.

I checked it over again when pulled, and the metering rod was not stuck. I was hoping it was simple, but no such luck. Once I had the top cover off, I manually moved the governor plate and rod to see if it made a difference to no avail

The pump body should arrive tomorrow to be gone over, and then back in my hands by the end of next week.
 
Well, I heard what was up with the pump head.

When it was taken apart, he found the pump liner completely rusted and the blades were a little funny looking. In addition, the plungers were stuck as it took a hammer and brass punch to knock them out.

Now with the bad parts replaced and the plungers moving smoothly, we'll be back in business. It will be shipped back on Monday, and I should have it in hand by the end of next week.
 
Well, I got the rebuilt pump head this week, and got it all installed today in between rain storms. Lol

I had the old parts returned, and yep the liner was rusted. You can see the corrosion line.



All went back easily, and once the housing was filled with fuel it started making its way to the injectors. When I had 3 injectors bled out, it was already trying to fire up. Yay!

I finally got the injectors bled, and then I needed to go back and tighten a few bolts guessing I didn't crush the washers enough. Finally all done, and it spun and few times and fired with no glow plugs!!

I let it run about 10 sec or so and it sounds good to have been sitting for a long time. I need to clean and swap on the new side door gasket tomorrow as it was dripping, but I was holding off until all was running since I've had it apart so many times.

After that, I'll let it warm up a bit and dump the oil to see how it looks. Depending on what I see, I might drop the oil pan, or stick a camera up the drain plug at a minimum.

Then I guess it's time to check the hydraulic fluid and trans fluid before checking out the rest. Oh, I guess I need to fix the return fuel line and put the metal back on.
