It appears water may be separating ethonal

Does water separate ethanol from gas?
Is the gas on top ethanol free? If so could one make a container to empty the bottom water Ethanol mix and leave the ethanol free gas on top?

Some time ago, my comments regarding a Cletrac, and the fuel it should use....................... Ethanol will emulsify water, pure gas won't........it'll separate and go to the bottom(ruining your tank bottom over time). This is the principle at work with the ethanol tester.

The damage caused by ethanol blends comes from both gasket deterioration, and the presence of the emulsified water in the entire fuel system(all ethanol blended gasoline picks up moisture from the air, or from condensation running down the side of the tank).

The good thing about ethanol free...............you can use a water separator, and drain the tank bottom. This alleviates 90% of the damage that's possible.

I have to ask. I have the same thing in my tank. they came to test for water as they were suspicious they had got water in the fuel. water test showed no water yet it looks just like yours in a jar.

The separation line is gasoline on top and ethanol/ water mixture on bottom. Wherever the line is is the percentage of ethanol in the fuel.the ethanol in the gasoline migrates to the water that is in the bottom of the bottle. The amount that the water line increases indicates the amount of ethanol that migrated to the water, since ethanol is hygroscopic.

It’s possible it will remove the corn squeezing’s. I drained a many tank with water in the fuel let it separate and pour the fuel back in the tank.

I have had that test tube for years and checked quite a bit of fuel I have never seen a test show 10%. I found most to be around 3%. Around here up until Skeets opened you could not find fuel with 10%. I use to use BP gas because I could never detect Ethanol in it. If you have a flex fuel vehicle it has an Ethanol sensor I have never seen a bad one other than the issue was at the connector.

I have had countless drivability issues where the customer got their fuel from a local Lowe’s food store. I told them to drive it out and put BP in it that was the fix. That’s why I don’t trust Food store are no name store Gas. Getting gas from the low bidder is not a good habit.

I make it a point to get my gas from a large scale food store. Never have to worry about credit card fraud from gizmos attached to the card reader because they inspect the pumps daily and put a security tag across the opening where a thief would access the pump or card reader. Been doing it for decades and zero problems with my E10 fuel or debit card.
One day I was at the store and the tanker drives up. I get my groceries and upon exiting the driver had the hoses in the the tanks filling them up. I went over and asked him where he got his fuel. His answer was a (huge....probably 2 dozen of the huge tanks you see at storage facilities, refineries and such) tank farm over near I 30 where most suppliers get their fuel.

Good grief. If you want ethanol free just buy it at the correct pump. Very common in Kansas, and if it is not common in your area you need to straighten your llocal government up and make them get real.

That isn't always possible. Two states I know of have mandated 10% ethanol in all of their gasoline. Delaware and New Jersey.
I have a brother and a sister that live in Delaware. Sis has to go to Maryland to get ethanol free gas for the mowers and outdoor equipment.

Something to know about making your own ethanol free gas...
The gas that is used as a base for the fuel is much lower in octane than the 87 most cars use. The ethanol is added as an octane booster and to oxygenate the fuel. As such, the gas you end up with is much lower octane than the non-ethanol gas sold at the pumps.
So, you end up with low octane gas. Hardly practical to separate gas from the ethanol on any large scale.

You are 100% correct! The base gas for fuel with ethanol is a low quality, low octane fuel. Usually around 84 octane in e10 where the ethanol brings the octane up to 87.

Does an engine with 6:1 compression ratio care?

If you mix water with ethanol gasoline the ethanol will suspend the water all through the gasoline. If you check it with water detector paste it will show as red dots all up and down the stick. There will be enough water in the gasoline to effect performance of the engine.

If you keep adding water to the gasoline eventually the water will settle to the bottom pulling the ethanol down with it because water is heavier than gasoline. This is called phase separation.

When phase separation happens you will have a section of high octane ethanol mixed with water on the bottom and lower octane gasoline on top. If you started with 87 octane gasoline the gasoline on top will be 84 octane. If you stated with 93 octane gasoline the gasoline on top will be 91 octane.

If you drain off the water mixture from the bottom the only way to get the water and ethanol to separate is to distill the mixture with your bootleg still

Trying to buy ethanol gasoline and making non ethanol gasoline at home using this process can be flip of the coin chance. While it is true most of the water will settle to the bottom dragging most of the ethanol with it there will always be a small amount of ethanol left in the gasoline holding water with it. Yes if you add enough water you can pull most of the water and ethanol out of the gasoline but now you have a large quantity of contaminated water to deal with.
