John deere 1010 special fluid question

looking to change the fluids in the transmisson and final drive. in the book it calls for SAE80 oil??

is this the same as 80w-90 geard oil?? or should i go to john deere directly and buy the oil?

the tractor is a 1964.

I am doing the same thing I have a 1963 RUS all apart on my shop floor just in the process of cleaning up and starting to put back together in the next couple weeks.
I went to Deere dealer and picked up 80W-90 for final drives and transmission.
This tractor had some water in both final drives and transmission so I drained Flushed with Diesel fuel and refilled with new 80W-90 ( I will probably run oil for one season and drain and replace to see if I got all the water out).
It looked like No one had ever checked the final drive oil levels based on how hard it was to get the plugs out.
Be sure to check/drain hydralics as mine had a small amount of water in it as well

To be specific, Deere called for SAE 80 or 303 oil or an equivlent.

SAE 80 gear oil is the same viscosity as 30W motor oil.
303 oil is equivalent to 10W-20 motor oil.

You can use any GL-5 or better rated gear lube. Just don't go too heavy if you use the machine in real cold weather.
80W-90 is fine, so is Hy-Guard or some other brand of universal tractor fluid.

THe issues with using certain gear-oils don't exist for the 1010 that you find in some others.
One example is the Cletrac, Terractrac and early Case crawlers. They can't use modern gear oils that are GL-5 because the extreme-wear additives plug up the wet steering brakes.

If there is an copper based metal in the system. Then either a trans/hydraulic oil. Or GL4 Marine gear lube that says copper safe.
GL5 uses a sulfur anti-wear additive that can corrode brass/bronze when moisture gets into the lube.

I had some 80w-90 gear oil which said GL-5 on it so i used it. I stopped by the john deere store to pickup my rims and asked him. he told me 80w-90 gear oil would work fine.

this is for the final drive, i have not changed the transmission yet. what ever came out seemed pretty think but did look to be okay, but i drained it anyway and replaced it. the tractor has been sitting for a while.
