Leaking Radiator

Hey Fellows I have a bad radiator leak.Either the tank has broken at the top or a stick went in.I must remove it.Can someone give me the stept by stept directions for removing the hood so I can get to everything.I put the radiator on back about 10 years ago but had no grill then and it was still rough. Thank for any tips that might save the knuckles and bruised arms...R.M. In AL
 
Loosen the lower dogleg bolts and the 4 carriage bolts that hold the hood to the dash.

Drain as much gas as you can from the fuel tank then detach the fuel line at the fuel valve.

Remove the steering wheel.

Detach the headliight wiring if you have that.

Lift the hood and doglegs off and set aside.
 
What model tractor? The directions differ you know.

If it's an 8N, this is how I do it.

After you get the 4 bolts off of the dash, remove the wire going to the head lights. Then, w/ the gas off, unscrew the fuel line at the carb. If the tank is full, you should drain the gas out. Then, get a couple of saw horses to put the hood on when you get it off. Remove the two bolts at the bottom of the dog legs. The grill is held in place by to hinges at the top & the dog legs at the bottom. After the dog leg bolts are out, the grill will fall out.....usually on your foot. Pull the hood forward about an inch, then up to clear the radiator cap. It should be easy after that. A helper makes it much easier. The radiator is held in place by the top hose & two carriage bolts at the bottom. Remove the nuts off of the bolts; the radiator will swing out (not lift off) like a door. While it's off, go ahead & replace the hoses & the t-stat (check out tip # 25, below)

If it's an 8N, no need to remove the steering wheel.

Any chance you can find the leak and fix it while still on the tractor. I drove a stick into mine several years ago, near the top,drained the radiator and soldered it right on the tractor. No problem since then. Good luck. Ron
 
Ditto what the others said.. see if you can ID the leak and fix it with the grill off.. etc.

lots less work if you can.

Soundguy do I need to remove the steering wheel if I do take off the hood and if so how do I get it to turn loose the shaft.

We don't even know what tractor.

I think an 8N you don't have to remove the steering wheel, and 9N you do have to remove it.

Removing the steering wheel can be a fun project. :lol:
 
Dunno - on my 2N it seems to be much easier to just take the steering wheel off than try to wiggle the hood into place underneath it.
 
It's a splined shaft.. a lil' pb oil and tugging normally gets them off.

I like to pul the acorn nut, then thread it back on a little, then tug up on the wheel.

in sever cases a 3-jaw puller may be needed.. but they can distort the hub.

You can also try tabbing around the circumference of the hub with a hammer to stretch it a bit..

I believe you can finagle the hood off with the wheel in place.. I've never tried it though... I've had good luck getting the wheels off without more than 'medium' fuss.. so i always just pull them.. etc.

All I kin say about the hood removal is,,, i like to remove the steering wheel,,, no it does not have to come off,,, I usual can remove and install the hood by my self,,, with the SW on you take a chance of fudge'n up the radiator neck,,, I have a HO-Made wheel puller that werks rite well,,, my self i would never use a 3 jaw puller,,, my luck taint that good

My HO-Made puller is made from a old SW,,, cut the outer ring off and bend hooks in the spokes,,, add a pusher bolt and nut and it will retrieve a stuck wheel,,, Mite have a pix some were will look.

Here is what the training manual shows, sounds a lot like what you have made Hobo.

It would be easy to make the open end ring with a torch, and a piece of rebar, an anvil and a hammer.

I've already got the puller that is in the pic. Now, all I need to do is build the ring. 8)

You don't know how many times I've tried to get that@#$!%^& S wheel off. I can do it but....sure messes with the paint job!!!!! :shock:

Might want to use a piece of scrap brass on top of the steering tube instead of a steel bolt, I'm not sure if it would help or not, just a though.
 

the bolt werks prefect,,, better than leaving the old nut on,,,, done my share of'em,,, iffin ya wanted to go high teck git a bolt long enuff to bottom out in the hollow tube (8N) then no pressure what so ever will B applyed to the threads,,, brass would B of no help,,,possible make it worst,,,, not my first rodeo

No doubt a rod that goes to the bottom would be a great plan!!!!
