M5 Missing when cold

Hi guys , I have an m5 deisel that misses when cold. I believe it's the front cyl. because it takes time to warm up when I touch it with my hand . It also has white smoke when cold and then only heat is exhausted after it warms up

I have an M5 that has the same problem you describe. It also seems to make it hard to start. I put on a reman inj. pump earlier this year. i was thinking it may be an injector or dirty energy cell.

Hi Josh , is this the Josh in Harbour Beach, if so it's Larry from Canada who bought your Allis spin out rim . Anyway , it doesn't sound like your reman pump solved the problem. Mine is also hard too start and I'll probably not fix it until spring since I don't need any of my tractor let me know how you make out with yours .

One thing you can try is when it is running put the back of your fingers on the energy cell to see which one is cooler, but be careful, just touch it lightly and quickly at first so you dont get burned.

You might try one of Harbor Freight's Infrared Digital Thermometers to find which cylinder is colder. The problem with my '60 M5-D is it is filling the crankcase with diesel when shut off. If I leave it long enough it will empty the filters. I need to try to reseal the inj. pump or transfer pump.

If it cleans up when warm, I'd leave it alone. I fear you will spend oodles of money and fail to make the proverbial "silk purse from a sow's ear". I had one and it was a tough start and slow warm up. Often I've wondered how good a MM salesman had to be to sell one. I picture the M5 on the lot smoking like a chimney and banging, popping, and carrying one, telling the customer that he should buy this and not the competition. That said, I liked my M5D and when warmed up, you hardly could even tell it was a diesel.

No, thats not me. I live in the UP actually. My tractor did not run when I got it, the pump shaft was broken. I dont remember the thing ever strarting up without being towed then. At 70 degrees, it will start and clean up quick. At 60, it needs a little help.
