Thats way to much tractor to be pulling a rake. Shoot I don't ever use any thing more then around a 20HP tractor to rake hay with

Shoot that even way more HP then you need for a baler. That thing puts out around 74HP. Nice looking MMs but way over kill for that job

Old, I seen a guy 3 or 4 days ago pulling a 256 NH rake with a big 4 wheel drive JD and a loader raised straight up. Kinda like pulling a push mower with my 666.

Yep and now days with the price of fuel what it is I like to pull a rake with the smallest tractor I can get by with. Saves fuel which in the long run saves $$$$. So far this year I have pulled my rake with an Allis C, a farmall 340 and the next one that will get the job is my 1935 JD-B. That way they all get a work out plus there small enough to save on the fuel $$$. I may even go with a mix of diesel/gas in the B just to save a few $$. But if I do that I will have to stop and look at the smoke rings it puts out

It may be overkill, but you can't argue with the set-up we've got. (other than the labor)

We run a Massey 285 on a Massey #12 baler, pulling 8'x16' or 18' racks behind it. Was looking at cutting on wed. or so but the forecast doesn't look so good right now. I'll just ahve to keep getti8ng the chopper and wagons all ready for putting up bedding, and see what happens. I cut the swamps on Sunday and ideally I can start chopping the bedding while letting the hay dry down some.

Joe did you know that old rake is around 100 years old now. Maybe you should put it in a museum and get a new Tedder. I have one just lit out in front as an ornament needs alot of work to make it run.

Old I pulled a left and right with a 460D 52 hp, atabout 900 RPM"s in 4th gear. I used 1/2 Gallon Per Hour and raked 27 acres in 2 hrs, mowed with a 12 ft haybine.

Where I farm it'd be marginal if the MM could handle it with a full load in the wagon.Baled last week with a NH 851 round baler hooked to a Ford 8000 and it was all the 8000 could do to pull the baler up these hills.Terrain is everything.Land I farm would make most flatlanders get nose bleed and messy pants and not necessarily in that order

Might just be that Joe-Pro is just getting started and dont have 4 or 5 tractors setting around. I had several old ones sort of hobby collecting before I started breaking ground and haying again.
Question, cost per hour raking, pulling hay wagon with JD 40? WD? Case D? On those days I want the cab the JD 4010 gets some light duty use too.

If that is over powered the guy I help must be way out there We Rake with a 966 IH with a 10 wheel rake and bale with front wheel assist NH and mow with a 986 IH the 966 uses less fuel and is a lot more comfortable to ride than his gas 770 oliver

Ok guys Dont have a Heart Attack, we have 13 tractors 12 are molines, we have a new wheel rake, that we use on the bigger firlds, but this is only a 5 acre field and wanted to use the old rake to work it a little as for the tractor that is pulling it, I like the tractor because of the wide front and powersteering. We use the U-302's on both rakes, as for the 670 on the Baler it is perfect size and the narrow front turns on a dime.

Shoot I use an Oliver Super 88 to pull my NH850 and it just plays with it. But ya I also don't have to worry much about any real hills. I do have a hill or 2 bit not all that big. Of course as the saying goes Oliver for the tough pulls and I have found that if you really want a tractor that will pull you need an Oliver LOl

Yep have the same problem here. Was going to cut yesterday to finish up my hay field but the weather man is calling for rain wednesday and thursdays so I'll hold off for a few more days. Then after I get my fields done I get to more over to a friends place and start baleing his place. At least for once in 5 years we are ahead on rian which is good been way to dry in this area for the last 5 or 6 years and haven't got a second cutting in 5 or 6 years maybe this year we will

I have an Oliver 1650D that I bale sometimes but on very steep land it won't handle the baler.I'm talking steep where I have to load the Ford 8000 with front weights,fluid in the rear tires and use the differential lock to pull the hills.You ain't drove a tractor until you pull the front end of that 8000 about 2 feet off the ground starting off(LOL)

Sounds like you need my little Case 930 bet it would pull them hills just fine and not have the front wheel problem either.

you ain't ever plowed in dry land with a 4020 and a kieverland 5 bottom semi-mount plow. that field i plowed was flat as could be but when you plowed too deep you knew it and when you went to raise the plow out a little the front end would come up. once i had that front end 6 ft in the air. it was this spring when we had a dry spell. that was a real adventure. i have over 300lbs worth of weights in the front too!!

You got that right. I pull a 4-16 Oliver 546 semi-mounted plow with our 1855 and I can get the front in the air pretty easy. Go too deep, you're in pure red clay. pick it up too fast in the middle of the feild when it's cutting too deep, that fornt end is coming up, no matter what.

Not sure what we've got on the front of our tractor, but we've got the starter, 1 stack, and 4 slabs on the front. Well over 300 lbs, not sure what the slabs weigh but I've heard some say 145 lbs each. Still get it off the ground about 3-4 ft at times.

You can be too underpowered, too- Years ago, I had a neighbor who had a JD H- it didn't get much use otherwise, so he greased it up every year in June and brought it over for me to use on the rake. Sent the wife out with the outfit to rake one day, and she came home spittin' nails when she was done. Seems the old gal (the H, that is) would only do about 4 MPH on the road, and the field was several miles away. Combine that with the temp being over 100, and it just became much too drawn out an affair for her liking.
