My tractor is STUCK

Hey All-

So We have had a very wet spring/early summer, and I was trying to get something done a little too fast after the rain and have sunk my tractor pretty good.

I buried it more trying to get unstuck. This is a 2 wheel drive Ford 4500, and i have a hay spear on the loader right now.

I have tried the trick attaching logs to the wheels like a paddle and all I have managed to do is dig out a deeper hole with those.

Im feeling like I am at the point where I don't have any other ideas and am going to need to call someone for help.

What kind of person do I call to pull my tractor out of the pasture?

Four choices: A neighbor and all the chains both of you have connected together.
A tow truck with heavy winch. (most will not go off road!!
Wait and dig it out as it dries.
Jacking it up on timbers under the axles and rebuilding the soil under the tires. (difficult and time consuming) Jim

Start with a neighbor with a good tractor. Don't ask someone with an 8n or compact that won't pull much. If none are available get a tow truck.

Get some long straps so pull out tractor ( puller ) is on dry turf .
Farm Family home had some 30 foot straps on special for ten dollars

Sounds like u have no experience getting a tractor unstuck. When it’s stuck it’s stuck do not dig it down to make things harder. Can’t see how bad your stuck either. Now u need a tractor at least 2 times bigger or a 4 wheel drive or even a crawler. Plus is there hard ground close cause if it’s all swamp then it’s a waiting game. Also use good high rated nylon straps. Or a 2 inch tow rope. A chain is useless when pulling something stuck out. U need a couple ft of slack then pour the coal to her. And also pull it out from the back the same way it went in. And be on your tractor and have it in reverse to help out. The longer the cable or strap the bigger the tractor u need. So check your neighbours to see if they have a 4x4 tractor.

I have never liked that approach.

Good way to break stuff or get hurt or both IMO.

i said 2 ft of slack not 20 ft. u need that little stretch for it to budge. i dont just yank on them with bunch of slack. and definitly with a chain you will break something. and thats also why u use the rated sling for the job. i am very cautious pulling stuff.

If all else fails try a shovel and dig. Not sure about the log method. You might try using the front fork stuck in the ground and the curl it to see if you can pull yourself forward or push yourself back if you can stick the fork enough not to break it. At least get the front wheels out of the mud. I'd try digging behind the rear wheels and stick some boards, posts, or plywood parallel with the wheels to back it out on. Would also need to dig behind the front wheels far enough back to allow it to start up on the wood.

If the tractor that is stuck has an axle sticking out the side or if tires way out and there is axle inside. you can take a good 1 .5 inch cable or I have used 4 inch flat straps. One on each side of the tractor. slowly back up and let it wrap on the axle. I did this a couple times and was amazed how smooth it came out.

I never would have thought of that as none of my tractors have axles like that.

I'd like to see that in action, I bet it would work slick.

Pretty much any heavy tow rig will come out and unstick it. Not cheap.

Yep, I have done the same. It's basically just a poor man's winch

This won't help you now but if you don't have anything at home in the shed big enough to pull you out then never ever take a chance and get stuck. I had a Cat trac when I finished farming. I new if I ever got that stuck I had nothing to pull it out so I never took any chances. But you don't need to be told that now. Good luck.

This thread sure does bring back some memories. Years ago, brother buried the 1466 with duals and a 20' disc behind her plum up to the belly. Front axle disappeared in the mud. Took a 4320 linked to a 4010 linked to a 4020 with a loader to extract that beast. And we only used chains. At one point we joked about getting a helicopter in to lift her out. Oh the good ole days.....

An old pig pole, a little scrap metal. Or just buy one.

Throw in a Portal winch mount.

Add a good winch and couple of snatch blocks.

You would not need to call anyone.
