Take a look at this pic. Is there anything in it that would lead you to believe it is NOT an old photo?

In addition to what FIT says the color looks funny for an old B&W photo and the paint really shines.

Along with all the other comments how about wide
rear rims and cut off spokes, the style of the hat
and the short sleeve shirt.

That color is sepia, and you could get prints made in that hue. Still can if you special request it.

The Roy Rogers hat could be one clue. Most of the pictures in vintage ads show men in overalls, wearing a fedora ( hat for those of us from NE Texas ), long sleeve shirts, and black lace-up shoes.

Agree with everyone on the front and back tires.

Why is the driver looking out to the horizon instead of looking at the ground where he is planting? Maybe his girlfriend just drove up in her BMW convertible wearing a pair of 'cheekers' and a tube top.

Unable to tell if his watch is a Timex or a Rolex.

Nice looking tractor either way.

I enjoyed your last post on the replacement tractor Id tags. Very good work on your part.

Good to hear from you again.

Oh, they made 290's way before that as well. My dad bought his first 290 in '48, then traded it in for a 490. The free jdparts.com parts book says built from 1941-, so they must still be building them. :)

As an old telephone man, look at the pole in the background just to the right of the airstack. It would have had a crossarm on it back in the 30's and 40's, no matter if it was a power pole or telephone pole. I agree with the others about tires and clothes. Do you have any of the Roswell spacecraft. Maybe we can solve that problem also.

I just thought because of the lustran type plates it was newer than the 40's. I know in the 40's we were using a 999 and 2 horses and checking corn. I am still using a 999 but have converted it to 3 point for my sweet corn. Thanks for the info. Russ

thanks for all the replies. I took the pic a week ago at our annual plow day for our club and was just wondering what things would stand out as "wrong". I knew the 23 degree tires would scream NEW, but never expected anyone to pick up on the lack of notches on the sides of the front tires, let alone the telephone poles! That was astounding. I've got a few more pics, but each of them had some dead giveaways that they weren't old, such as the wrong mufflers, sunglasses, etc. Its tough to put together a vintage looking photo that will pass muster!
