Oliver 550 wiring question.

I am putting an alternator on my neighbor's 550 Oliver tractor (1964 model).

Presently it has a generator with an external regulator. The tractor has no ammeter. It has a positive grounding system.

I would be changing over to a standard negative grounding system with a one wire alternator with a built in regulator.

Am I correct- that I would need to switch the wires at the coil (the wire from the starter and the wire going to the distributor)? Thanks.

You are correct. With negative ground, the negative (-) terminal on the coil goes to the distributor.

If generator had a 3 wire regulator, remove generator and regulator along with Armature and Field wires. The wire on the BAT terminal of regulator will go to output of alternator.

If generator had a 4 wire regulator with L (Load) terminal you will need to connect the input of the starter and light switch to the alternator output.

Except the existing wire may not have the capacity to handle alternator out put.

The fuel and temp. gauges will not work corectly. You will need to buy a negative ground cluster gauge.

That's right, you need to buy a new cluster guage. When you pull the old one out take notes of where all the wires go on the guage. There are some "jumper" wires between terminals.
