Oliver hg engine options

Hello all, I have an offer to buy an Oliver hg crawler but it's missing the engine and I was wondering what all engines will fit? I'm looking for a direct bolt on. There was three different models of Hercules engines correct? Will an Oliver 60 or 66 engine work or maybe one from a 70? Thanks for any help

Just find an IXB-3 Hercules. They were available in other pieces of equipment as well, we had one in a welder and another in a power unit.

Or- or, pass on the tractor without the engine unless you can get it for a song and it has a great undercarriage. They're already not worth much complete and running so going to all that trouble for a project could be quickly cost prohibitive.

What are some things to look at on the undercarriage? I'm not real familiar with crawlers so I don't know exactly what to look for .

If everything is in good shape on the undercarriage and transmission how much do you guys think it would be worth roughly?

We had hg 42 .
The final drive the bearing rollers fell out , one wedge into the gear of the track sprocket . So that was a job. And it did it in the middle of the road pushing snow. How it did not bust the gear ,the lord must have been helping us that day. Some how got it into the barn for repairs, this is not an easy job .

I'm assuming you're asking about a normal Cletrac HG42 or Oliver OC-3. It's worth scrap price unless the undercarriage is pristine and the clutch/brakes/transmission are great, but I don't know how you'd tell without it running and driving. Out west here they're $1500-2500 complete running/driving. Some guys paint them up and ask 3-4k, but the price usually drops quickly. People ask too much and they sit for sale for a long time. It's a bottom barrel little crawler when it comes to value. As a project, you'll burn money and never see a return, like most things with an engine and tires (tracks in this case). On a little HG/OC, I really just take a quick look at the tracks. If the grousers are nubs, I consider it basically junk, and I don't look at much else, unless the price is just so cheap I know I could get back my money in scrap.

If someone was willing to pull the engine it makes me think there's much more going on and someone else needed an engine. If you're really in the market for a little crawler I'd suggest a running/driving Cat D2 (we have a lot of these out here in CA as well). If you're an Oliver guy and want an HG or OC, buy a complete running sample. If you're into projects, this could be a good one, I don't know. But it sounds like you don't either, so I would walk away unless you can haul it home for a couple hundred dollars as a parts machine, and then buy another complete tractor.

Your money your decision- if you like it and it makes you happy, go for it.

I have seen one with a 66 engine but they had to do some fab work to make it fit. As far as what they are worth. I bought an HG68 maybe 15-20 years ago for $1000 Can. At the time I think our dollar was on par with US. Tinkered with it a bit and got it running half decent, but didnt really invest more than some time in it and sold it maybe 10 years ago now for $2500 but it was in pretty decent mechanical shape. Like others have said they are pretty much at the bottom of value as far as crawlers go. Lots of them around and I just never used it. A friend of brother wanted it to haul wood out of the bush so I reluctantaly sold it to him.

I got a chance to look at the crawler today and it looks ok. When I originally created this post I was under the impression that the crawler had no engine. But when I talked to the owner I found out that it does have an engine I'm just not sure which one. However It is missing the magneto starter carb radiator seat pan fuel tank and sheet metal. The owner said he wants $300 for it.

That was someone's HG-68 parts machine for sure. That thing is rough. Might as well not have an engine as it looks like the manifold is cracked and the spark plug hole looks as if there's crud all over in it. Everything is missing from that thing. PTO and belt pulley is not uncommon, but they didn't all have them. I refer you to my previous comment. If you already have one and need parts, I'd give $100. Otherwise, walk away.

You know, my first thought was "Pass". It would be better if it only needed an engine than all the things that it does need. Then I was in the shower and started thinking. If I had a chance to buy it for that and it was close to home, I'd bring it home and sit on it until I could find a running tractor with rotted tires or a bad rear end. Something with a frame, like an AC WD, Massey Harris 22, I believe I even saw not too long ago where somebody used an Oliver 70. Take a torch and welder and modify the frame as needed and use the entire tractor engine, radiator, gas tank, hood and grill. You could make quite a conversation peice out of it.

I believe they built one using allis parts.

Is this the one you were talking about?
