Oliver OC 46

Well got the final drive back together. Replaced some bolts on the final cover, and the pinion cover. Ordered lug nuts, but wouldnt you know, I ordered 1 less than I needed. Not to worry though, I will be tearing the fuel pump out, and it's likely im going to need a new one.

Today I got the fuel pump out. Man that was an effort to get into it. The frame of the console, loader, make it almost impossible to get in there to get those 2 bolts out. So I kind of figured the pump had a bad diaphragm. It was pushing fuel out of the breather hole. Tore the pump apart. This is the older style pump, and will definitely be getting some pictures on here because there aren't many on the net.

The following needs replaced:
Diaphragm
Sediment bowl seal and screen mesh
Seal that sits around lifter arms at bottom
Engine gasket

I looked at the rest, springs, flow valves above diaphragm, and etc. All looked pretty good and not badly worn. Even the lever didn't have too bad of wear. It wasn't worn down from engine, just polished. It almost looks like just normal gasket wear from being dry.

Now I will have to see if rebuild kit will be cheaper, or a new pump.

Well, I got my pump kit today so I took some time to rebuild it. All cork gaskets were pretty bad. Kit had all replacements. I fished out all old ones, and polished contact surfaces with scotch Brite pad. Pulled the flow valves out and replaced. Rubber unfortunately was position wrong on copper shaft that levers ride up and down. Had to drill out new holes in rubber for correct positioning.

OK, today was the day. Fuel pump was going on. Unfortunately family had other plans for us, farm show.... we got back later and I scurried to get the pump on with the short remainder of the day. Took some time because clearances are trying to get it on. Then I put the old flexible line back on. It's not very flexible btw. Got it on, tightened down, started right up. Line leaked. Shut it down, tightened it up, started it, and it leaked. Shut it down, tightened it some more on the hose clamps, started it up, and leaked again.

At this point all signs were saying this flexible fuel line was used to its last bit. Ran to tractor supply to get some fuel line and new hose clamps to use. Racing the sunset to get back home, so I could get this new line on and make sure its not leaking. Got new line cut, new clamps on, and all tightened down. When to go crank engine.....

Starter just spins... (no contact on flywheel)
Tried again, starter spins (no contact on flywheel)
Tried it again, no success.

I'm not much of a betting man, but im betting that spring gear assembly on the end of it is pinched and not flying out correctly.

Anyway, I need to reroute temp gauge probe wire, which requires me to take wires off starter anyway, so why not take it out.

Point of whole story, when your racing against time, time always wins.

Well got the starter taken off. Cleaned everything up, used scotch brite pad, and light lube on all the surfaces. Moved the temp gauge probe wire. Fueled it up, and it fired right up.

Got excited, and put the right side back on.

Sorry for lack of updates on this. Weather has been inhospitable where I live, and working outside adds to the struggle. I did use the oc46 to clear out the alley between my house and the neighbors from the snow. Nothing too laborious for it. I ordered a helicoil kit for the track frame where it connects to the brackets that connect to final drives and sprocket. Next week should get up into 30s so I might have a chance to rethread and drain finals.

Some weather above 30* today. Got home from work and had an opportunity to thread the track frame. Outside was smooth sailing. Tons of room, drilled out easily, tapped easily, helicoil went in easy, and support bracket went on and new bolt threaded in great.
Now the harder more trying part. If I would have known these bolts were stripped before, I would have done all this when the frame was off the machine. The underside was a pain. Not a whole lot of clearance. The loader frame / dozer frame was in the way the entire time. I couldn't use my tap handle because I had no room to turn it. The solution was to use my ratchet with drive and socket. Very unstable, but it worked and I got it threaded. Next issue was threading the helicoils in. I ruined 2 because I pushed to hard when I twisted it in and it caused it to skip a thread (fine thread). Finally I realized what I was doing and twisted it letting it thread itself in. I guess some of the error was lack of space, the fine thread, and my impatience because of sunlight fading.
I was successful, finally got a coil in, and put the bracket on. Please enjoy these pictures, and my sprung helicoils from my failures.

Nice 50* day today. Took drawbar off. Pulled drain plugs. One drain plug hole was broken off. It still can accept plug and does still work. Pulled back cover. Made new paper gasket. Cleaned mating surfaces with drill and cup wire wheel. Put it all back together. Added oil, but need to get some more. I was a tad low. Enjoy the pictures. We should be good now. There are a few things that need tended to yet, but nothing that I can't start using it finally.
