Oliver OC 46

You are funny sir. I didn't know I was supposed to keep track lol. If I were to do this project right and i had $$$, id do an overhaul on that engine. Id pull it, and send it off. I would have to say doing all the rollers was the most time consuming, tearing off each side of track and track frame, and cribbing the machine. Doing it with a floor jack and some oak blocks I had to mill with a chainsaw. Like all projects though we always under estimate the time needed. If I had a garage, id probably be able to get more done. Working outside has alot of down days.

I know you put a lot of hard work into this project.

So took the crawler out for about 30 min. I let it warm up for about 10 minutes and started working it. Mostly down hill to see what would happen. Temp gauge got close to work on the gauge, but mostly hung around in the upper cool zone. The tooth bar, wow. Huge difference. I can really get roots and rocks if I keep my bucket at the right angle. Seems like the engine is running pretty good after this second oil change to flush it.

I had to clean the Sediment bowl out over the weekend. Unfortunately I had to remove wires off the distributor cap to do it. Then I lost track of wire order. Anyway key term search for anyone needing it. Oliver oc 46 4 cylinder plug wire to distributor cap order. See attached picture

Im starting to see a trend here. Ive been using the oc 46 pretty hard the last while, and over rough terrain. Seems like im getting more crud out of the tank into the Sediment bowl and lines. I have a plug on the elbow at where the line goes into Sediment bowl. I didn't have compressed air to blow it out. Im thinking I should keep some pipe cleaners on hand in my bag of emergencies. So far all other systems are working fine. The hydraulic fluid is a little more drippy when it gets hot from the cylinders. Future tasks:
Drain tank, take it out, and clean it really well.
Maybe look into repacking cylinders

So, with the fuel system on oc46, its gravity fed until it gets to the fuel lifter (pump). If your tank is low in fuel, and it is at an angle to where the Sediment bowl is higher than the fuel level of the tank it will not fill the bowl and keep the pump primed. I filled an air tank, blew out the lines into pump Sediment assembly. Reattached the lines, still no fuel. That is where I came to my discovery.

1. If your working on uneven ground keep that tank full.

To get the crawler started and moved to a better parking location I had to figure out how to get fuel to it because I did not bring more fuel with me, I used what air I had left in the air tank, held a rag over the tank opening, and slightly pressurized the tank to push fuel into the Sediment bowl and pump. Be mindful of the slightly pressurized part.

Started right up, and moved it to even ground. Now that its on even ground, I will check fluids before I start working it again.

Basic note. Your Carter style pump is probably rebuildable. First check no fuel in oil, then police for any air leaks or rotted hoses in suction. Pump should lift if suction is wet, regardless of tractor angles.
Did some tests on the fuel while I had it out and it did it again.
Fuel tank was between 1/4 to 1/3. Same thing as last time, not getting fuel. I rebuilt the fuel pump cause it had a cracked rubber gasket. I blew out lines, flow when I put it back together. Put Sediment bowl back on tightened it down and it wouldnt fill. This would mean no air leaks there at pump and up to Sediment bowl. Seems like its a pump issue maybe. I am going to call Zimmermans and pick their brains about it on monday. Fuel will go into the bowl if its not tight meaning fuel level is definitely sufficient. Im thinking my pump isnt doing its job entirely.

Sounds like a tear down. I was thinking it might be one of the valves. I did replace with the kit valves. I'll try to tear down the pump this week and I'll give an update

So, definitely a pump issue. I got 5 gallons of fuel, dumped it in. Started right up. It seems like the pump is not lifting the fuel as it should. So for now im going to dump fuel in it until I have a good moment to tear the pump apart. Too many projects. Right now its acting like a gravity system.

Time to eat crow. The problem was not the pump at all. I started testing everything as far as flows. The culprit was the inline filter you see in the photo. It was causing such a pressure issue it wasn't pumping correct because it is a low pressure pump. Then it wasn't filling the carburetor correctly. The fuel starvation. Please enjoy the photos and a link for a short video of where the oliver oc 46 has excavated for my Chinese sawmill. I have more to do, but the oc46 seems to be handling it.

Little oliver oc 46 is a beast for setting up the sawmill pad. I'll have to think of a way for it to skid logs though. Its not a long distance driver.

Nice setup Crownests , keep up with the updates , help us see what’s happening with the project.

Looks like a filter I had on the 79 ford 351 Windsor auto lite 2 barrel carburetors now on that Ollie’s.
I had that filter, one plug up on van almost ruin a vacation. Suggest you buy two more filters. 🤔

I already have a spare. Seems like a carb rebuild kit wouldnt hurt either in the future.
