Ordered Electronic Ignition for my 202

For the most part, other than some fuel line plugging which I think I have under control, it has run pretty well since I got it. Even though it starts and runs fairly well, it has always had a slight miss that has been noticeable but not enough to cause problems. A couple of days ago I was using it and it became worse and worse to the point where I'd hit the throttle and it would kind of "sputter" up to rpm and not run very smooth. It seemed similar to earlier problems I had with fuel supply but not exactly. So I took the carb off and cleaned it, made a new gasket for carb to manifold and fired it up again and adjusted it. Still no better. Removed the plugs and found that one of the four looked like it was burning properly, two were quite black and sooty and one was kind of in between. The one that was burning properly was correctly gapped, the others were not (go figure). The two sooty ones had gaps that were visibly too close and the in between one didn't look bad but was. So I cleaned them up with the wire wheel and re-gapped them. I also filed and gapped the points (again worn pretty bad). When I turned the key it fired right up and sounded better than before but I still have a bit of a sputter. The throttle runs up smoothly without sputtering so that's better but it's still not as smooth as I think it should be. Not sure how smooth they can possibly run but I figure it could be a little better.
So today I ordered a Pertronix electronic ignition kit and new plugs and wires. I'll keep you all posted as to how it all works out. I know someone was asking a week or so ago about the electronic kits.

Yes, please let us know. I ws going to order one but Steiner has discontinued carrying them and they told me it was because they had a high failure rate and that a lot of the tractor owners coldn't install them correctly. I'd be very interested in learning your experience. I talked to Pertronix and they told me that their failure rate is less than 2% and the installation is easy. I'd like to get one but not if they have problems.

The pertronix are the way to go. Just make sure you install the coil that goes with the new System or if your not make sure you have a resistor in line that brings you down to 3 ohms resistance. The pertronix coil that is made to go with the ignitor is the easiest. Good luck.

"make sure you have a resistor in line that brings you down to 3 ohms resistance."

OBVIOUSLY, what you meant to say was to use a suitable resistor to bring the total resistance UP to at least 3 Ohms. Lower resistance is NOT an option.

Otherwise, you're gonna let some REAL expensive smoke out of the pertronix module.

I've got almost 300 hours and 4 years on the pertronix kit I put in my Oliver 1600. The thing always ate ignition parts so about 20 hours after I fixed it up and rebuilt it, I got fed up with the points and condensors and got rid of them. Not a problem since. I left the other coil on, as it was a new one I bought from AGCO when I did the engine.

The Pertronix kit in my case made a great tractor into an even better one, and I highly recomend doing it if your tractor is giving you fits.

We do however have a Massey 165 that is still on points and condensor, but it rarely gives troubles and in the 18-20 years we've owned it, we've only had to replace them twice. The dealer may have done it when it was in for a few things, but otherwise it's a good tractor and rarely acts up.

That's good info., I did not order the coil. I guess I will have to.

As regards installation, I have a background in electronics and I install remote car starters and other vehicle accessories on the side so I don't anticipate any trouble.

Coil ordered. So I ordered the ignition kit, new plug wires, new plugs and the ignition coil. Hopefully that will be all I need to get things going.
I could have added a resistor to my stock coil but I figure I might as well start out with everything fresh to give it a fair test.

Hopefully it will be in sometime this week.
