My wife joined and I got a free spouse membership. We've been AARPs for about 10 years. Biggest benefit we found is their road service, similar to AAA, but (at the time we joined) a little cheaper. Hotel discounts add up also, since we're on the road quite a bit. But most hotels will give you the AARP discount without seeing your card, so you don't really need it for that. I don't agree with their politics at all, so I make it a point whenever I write my congressmen to state that I'm an AARP member and a union member, and that neither speaks for me. Maybe if Congress hears that message enough it will diminish the influence of AARP and unions.

Just send back the application blank. Ive done that at least twice with the NRA packets I keep receiving. The paper it is printed on is a little coarse for much else.

AARP is essentially the same sort of charade as the Humane Society. A front for something quite different that what it appears. They don't represent the typical older American in their political actions.
As far as I can tell, AARP is a retail distributor for several insurance companies. They buy in bulk and market to the mass consumer.
I have always been healthy and never bought any health insurance. It paid off. However, when I became eligible for social security, I signed up for Medicare Parts A (hospital) and B (80% of doctor's fees).
Last February, I had an obstructed small intestine. After the medicos (hospital/doctors) got thru with me, they racked up more than $60,000 in charges. They removed 3' of small intestine. I am liable for about $5000. I could have signed up last fall for a no-cost medigap plan and saved at least half of that. Higher cost plans ($110 per month) from the same carriers would have saved more. Every state has different premiums and coverages.
The first thing to do is see whether you are eligible for Veterans Affairs medical services. There is a VA rep in every town across the nation. I did that when I got out of the hospital and have been pleasantly surprised at the considerable amount of testing they have done on my behalf. Today, they spent an hour and a half on my eyes which are in great shape. No cost. They want me to come back annually for continued examinations. I'll be seeing them next month for a free colonoscopy. They gave me a free Cat-Scan several weeks ago. My initial meeting included a physical exam, blood and urine tests, and a chest x-ray.
So, for starters, check eligibility for VA and SS benefits. If you qualify for Medicare, look at the websites for your local Medigap providers.

trash it. i nor my were ever a member or returned any thing and we were getting crap from them every day. i finally called them and told them i don't like their politics or their junk mail and to stop sending it. took about a month for it to stop. chuck

I got tired of having to throw their garbage into my trash can, and then have to pay to have it carted off. I began taking all of their stuff to me and jamming it back into their self addressed, prepaid postage envelope and mailing it back to them at their expense, but they never let up. Finally I wrote them a letter and told them that if they didn't take my name off of their lists, that I was going to take them to court to make a claim so I could start billing them for my time, and storage of their property. They finally quit sending me stuff. Hey, there is a God.

Thurlow, They do have their upside: some you mentioned, and reasonable supplemental health insurance, and as stated they do support just about every abundant cause and candidate. I could give a rat's butt less about their stance on gay marriage because that's just no one's business but the 2 people involved, and doesn't harm anyone, just offends the sensibilities of those that tend to mistakenly mix religion with politics. My problem with them is that they are vehemently anti gun. They will never see a dime of mine!
The best response to them that I have seen is my father's: every time he gets a mailing he stuffs it all in the SASE envelope they provide along with a bunch of 1/2" washers and a photo copy of a pic of one of his guns! They keep sendin' 'em! lol

When they send me junk, I cut up the plastic cards, restuff their "post paid" envelopes and send all the ads back to them with a note to take me off their list. They still keep sending junk.

Seems to me they figured out that selling insurance made more money than memberships. I read their articles but don't agree with their politics and few articles mean anything to me. I think ONE time I got a 5% discount on something while traveling.

Your call but I recommend NOT joining. Reasons:
1. I don't agree with them on anything.
2. You and I already have TRICARE. Nothing beats that.
3. Discounts are already available thru AAA, Retired Military, Senior Citizen (just have to prove your age).
4. Biggest reason of all. Once you join, they'll use you as a member forever on their headcount sheet.

Wow! I am so glad to know that so many people have seen thru the AARP. I thought I was alone in refusing to support this for-profit/ non-profit, political lobbyist group.

OMG Larry, I thought I was the only one that did that!!! Too funny. The last 2 I sent back had "Recycle" printed on the back of the return envelope. I circled "Recycle" with a pen and wrote "I am!" Been a few weeks since I got any crap from them, probably due for some about today! Been getting their junk for 7 years not, never have given them a red cent. Figure if they can waste that much money on advertising, why would I support them?
