Anybody belong? I'm opposed to their politics, but I know there are some benfits such as motel discounts, etc. Got an application in today's mail; send it back or trash it? Are the benefits worth surrendering my morals?

Aarp is not the only such "kid on the block." Do your research and sign up with one that shares your values.

(quoted from post at 19:57:53 04/24/12) I'm not ready to admit that I'm old enough to belong so I keep trashing my applications.

Gary
Me, too. They quit sending them to me couple years ago. Now the wife gets them

I can't stand their politics, so I just send back an empty application. Makes em pay postage and someone to open it!

My wife joined and I got a free spouse membership. We've been AARPs for about 10 years. Biggest benefit we found is their road service, similar to AAA, but (at the time we joined) a little cheaper. Hotel discounts add up also, since we're on the road quite a bit. But most hotels will give you the AARP discount without seeing your card, so you don't really need it for that. I don't agree with their politics at all, so I make it a point whenever I write my congressmen to state that I'm an AARP member and a union member, and that neither speaks for me. Maybe if Congress hears that message enough it will diminish the influence of AARP and unions.

Throw it away. Schiester bunch. weeding their way into Medicare/medicade. It's no wonder that the system is broke-or about to get there. do your self and others a favor, chit can any literature that has any affiliation to A A R P.
LOU.

Been throwing their stuff away for years. I heard not long ago that their tax free status was being investigated because of their incestuously close relationship to a few insurance companies.

Just send back the application blank. Ive done that at least twice with the NRA packets I keep receiving. The paper it is printed on is a little coarse for much else.

Yep, and to add to their other short-comings, they support gun control. 66 and still not a member. To me gun control is hitting what you aim at.

AARP is essentially the same sort of charade as the Humane Society. A front for something quite different that what it appears. They don't represent the typical older American in their political actions.

As far as I can tell, AARP is a retail distributor for several insurance companies. They buy in bulk and market to the mass consumer.

I have always been healthy and never bought any health insurance. It paid off. However, when I became eligible for social security, I signed up for Medicare Parts A (hospital) and B (80% of doctor's fees).

Last February, I had an obstructed small intestine. After the medicos (hospital/doctors) got thru with me, they racked up more than $60,000 in charges. They removed 3' of small intestine. I am liable for about $5000. I could have signed up last fall for a no-cost medigap plan and saved at least half of that. Higher cost plans ($110 per month) from the same carriers would have saved more. Every state has different premiums and coverages.

The first thing to do is see whether you are eligible for Veterans Affairs medical services. There is a VA rep in every town across the nation. I did that when I got out of the hospital and have been pleasantly surprised at the considerable amount of testing they have done on my behalf. Today, they spent an hour and a half on my eyes which are in great shape. No cost. They want me to come back annually for continued examinations. I'll be seeing them next month for a free colonoscopy. They gave me a free Cat-Scan several weeks ago. My initial meeting included a physical exam, blood and urine tests, and a chest x-ray.

So, for starters, check eligibility for VA and SS benefits. If you qualify for Medicare, look at the websites for your local Medigap providers.

Far to abundant to suit my needs. I send my money to more Christian and Conservative causes.

Hello thurlow,
Short answwer NO!. When you think you can get a discount just ask for it. Many places I ask they say O.K.
I just got a set of tires for my vehicle at 10% discount for the second time. The guy taking the discount off said I was the first one to ask?
If you are a senior, go to your local senior center, they will have booklets with all the discounts, and the merchants list.Around here senior coffee, in many places, is always $.50, but you got to ask!
by the way, the people that mailed you the invitation work for the AARP. When I asked them to take me off the list, the toll me I had to call AARP, they were not!
Guido.

trash it. i nor my were ever a member or returned any thing and we were getting crap from them every day. i finally called them and told them i don't like their politics or their junk mail and to stop sending it. took about a month for it to stop. chuck

The 17 guys who replied below you - not counting myself - have collectively posted nearly 61,000 times on these boards.
You have posted 32 times.
The beauty of these boards is that from the very first post each of us has the same right to voice our opinion.
But the opinions of a guy like Big Fred with 13000 posts or rrlund and John T with 11000 each are gonna carry more weight than yours.
That's just how it goes.

Several years ago, I received an application to join, their ""fine"" group BUT when they showed a couple of @%&D*$ GAYS getting married and being happy about it #$&*%^^ I promptly"BURNED it UP!!!

I got tired of having to throw their garbage into my trash can, and then have to pay to have it carted off. I began taking all of their stuff to me and jamming it back into their self addressed, prepaid postage envelope and mailing it back to them at their expense, but they never let up. Finally I wrote them a letter and told them that if they didn't take my name off of their lists, that I was going to take them to court to make a claim so I could start billing them for my time, and storage of their property. They finally quit sending me stuff. Hey, there is a God.

Good luck,

Mark

Thurlow, They do have their upside: some you mentioned, and reasonable supplemental health insurance, and as stated they do support just about every abundant cause and candidate. I could give a rat's butt less about their stance on gay marriage because that's just no one's business but the 2 people involved, and doesn't harm anyone, just offends the sensibilities of those that tend to mistakenly mix religion with politics. My problem with them is that they are vehemently anti gun. They will never see a dime of mine!
The best response to them that I have seen is my father's: every time he gets a mailing he stuffs it all in the SASE envelope they provide along with a bunch of 1/2" washers and a photo copy of a pic of one of his guns! They keep sendin' 'em! lol

When they send me junk, I cut up the plastic cards, restuff their "post paid" envelopes and send all the ads back to them with a note to take me off their list. They still keep sending junk.

Seems to me they figured out that selling insurance made more money than memberships. I read their articles but don't agree with their politics and few articles mean anything to me. I think ONE time I got a 5% discount on something while traveling.

Mark

I did join,1 time, but will never renew!I get
more junk mail from them than any other source!
They must use an extremely high percentage of
their assets to mail out begging letters
Their health plan is "United Health Care"...I had
United Health care, before I retired, and it was
absolutely the WORST health Insurance that I"d
ever had...they Weaseled out of everything that
they should have paid. They "say" that they offer
lots of discounts..I get the Same discounts on
motels from AAA. I need AAA because we travel a lot,(not so much now with high gas cost) I don"t
NEED AARP!

Your call but I recommend NOT joining. Reasons:
1. I don't agree with them on anything.
2. You and I already have TRICARE. Nothing beats that.
3. Discounts are already available thru AAA, Retired Military, Senior Citizen (just have to prove your age).
4. Biggest reason of all. Once you join, they'll use you as a member forever on their headcount sheet.

Grow up and get into the real world. Tractor people do talk about stuff besides just tractors. I bet you a abundant AARP member. Libs are the first to complain about something they don't like to see/hear or read.

Wow! I am so glad to know that so many people have seen thru the AARP. I thought I was alone in refusing to support this for-profit/ non-profit, political lobbyist group.

Keep up the good work.

Typical scare tactic marketing.

"Be protected" "Don't let this happen to you" "What will your kids do" etc etc.

OMG Larry, I thought I was the only one that did that!!! Too funny. The last 2 I sent back had "Recycle" printed on the back of the return envelope. I circled "Recycle" with a pen and wrote "I am!" Been a few weeks since I got any crap from them, probably due for some about today! Been getting their junk for 7 years not, never have given them a red cent. Figure if they can waste that much money on advertising, why would I support them?

I'm only 27 and for some reason I get their crap in the mail. Last time I checked I've got almost another lifetime to go before I'm of their minimum age.
