Pto shaft repair.

Managed to plug my combine yesterday and twist off the PTO shaft. Since a replacement is not easy to find I decided to fix it. It's a long shaft and the break is in a good spot so it worked out good. I cut the damaged part out and found a pipe that fit snug inside, it was an old bent trailer jack tube. I clamped it to a heavy angle to keep it straight. I welded the pipe around the ends and did some plug welds to make sure it was solid. Then added some plates to spread the stress out further. Got it all done and back together and working good in about an hour.

Hey Jon.

Nice looking work!

Sometimes you don't need a machine shop to do a repair like that.

When I was a young fella I broke a car driveshaft (abusing it) and with no funds stuffed a pipe inside and drove welding rods between to center it and stick welded it together.

Amazingly it had no vibration except for a little buzz at 65 or so.
