Pulling the Trans on an 885DB

I have read the shop manual describing the steps to remove the transmission on an 885 David Brown. Mine has a leak between the differential and the transmission that is getting worse, the result of someone's been in there before judging from the silicone. Plus, one of the shift rail sockets is badly worn. This is only in the planning stages as it will be a cold weather project.

I'd like to know if there are any short cuts, the shop manual recommends removing each sub assembly one at a time from each side of the tractor, until the whole back half is a pile of parts. Also, what type of lifting device is recommended.

Experience to date is splitting the tractor for a clutch and pulling the reduction boxes for brakes. Removing the transmission looks like a much bigger job.
