i have a 1939 a john deere and i am looking to reduce the 1st gear ratio. can i get a 1st gear reduction from another tractor. i am going to pull with it on 15.5x38. any help would be helpful

You have a total of 3 ratios for the reduction gear sets. The '39 should have a 36/86tooth count. A late A (creeper gear, above 648,000) has a 34/88 count, and a 620/630 has a 33/89 tooth count. The late a set will slow you down about 8%, and the 620 set slows you down about 12%. Obviously you have to change the gears as a set. Good luck, Mike

Mike don't forget that most late "A" & number series have a smooth output shaft with woodruff key & his 39 will have a splined shaft that will have to be changed ..take care...Kent

The smooth shaft/woodruff key was only used on late A's from 648,000-657,392. I think everything after that used the splined shaft (at least that what the illustrations in the parts book shows). Thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten about that one difference. Mike

Good deal ..reason I brought it up was I had to go through [5] parts tractors before I found a splined shaft for my 37..the other [4] were keyed...Happy Thankgiving....Kent

I used a late A Clutch assembly, but had to remove a late big Gear & install it on an early A spider. Works very well in a 3 mph class with 14.9's.

thanks everybody for the very helpful information. now does anybody have a gear reduction and belt pully from a 620/630 they are whanting to part with and if so let me khow. thanks agian

POWER THE THING UP SO THAT IT WILL RUN THE SPEED FOR THE CLASS MILE AN HOUR YOURE PULLING IN . BEST PULLING TIP I WAS EVER GIVEN. WORKS FOR ANY BRAND ALSO

This is the advantage of the gearing change, NATPA Division 2 in limited to 3 mph. This & a local sled also pulls at 3 mph. This gearing works well with 14.9"s, you can run the rpm up in 2nd gear, rather than run half throttle. If rules allow, 16.9"s work well at 3.5 mph. as well.

IM MISSING something . how does installing a 1st gear ceeper gear in the hi lo transmissions effect second gear.

Yes you are missing something. If you've never had one apart, the first reduction gear set is after the clutch, before the transmission. This effects ALL gear selections, not just low.

never had one apart .dad just looked for an a to purchase with a creeper gear it seamed to be less trouble. im a ac fan myself even though i own a h i figured since two cylinders are so weak i would buy one of the weekest ones so weak the factory installed gov. bypass on them and its light to move around to.

U know what mlpankey I have seen alot of stock two lungers whip up on alot of Allis Chalmers that werent stock so I would quit talking smack.

FIRST of all i never said i knew anything about a john deere . told a guy the other day to call kent on how to do it cause i didnt know how but knew it could be done . come on down lets see what you got . if youre as good as you act then you must be board with winning . so loosing might give you some motivation .down with the king . we in the south could probably come up with a porcelan throne to send back with you. brown stains and all.

I have a 50 cockshutt that eats AC's for breakfast. Dont need to waste my time and money to come down there. Need I say more?

Sounds like you two need to calm down. My goodness this website is to help people not fight over who thinks they have the best tractor. My opinion is that all those tractor companys had great ideas and some that werent so great. I've seen all kinds of tractors give the woopen or take it. No one is invinceable and if they say they are they are cheating or lieing. Some people i guess never grow up.

SOUNDS like the name brand of youre tractor would explain what you should do . cockshutt.

Like I said below you two children just need to quit relpying to each other. I think my 2 and 4 year old nephews act more mature than you guys.

I simply stated that i was missing something on how it affected all gears and not just one it was explained reasonably to me for i didnt know how the internals worked . then came a pompus you know what called pulling king . so ive pulled against cockshutt 50s several times 1 more want hurt me but it might him . down with the king the stained brown throne awaits .
