Sorry it's kind of long. Mel, Thad, dboll & others, need some honest opinions & answers about swapping/replacing the 301 in an 830 low profile with a 401BD I have from a '69 970. This is just to use a little and maybe for a few plow days. The 301 at this point is leaking antrifreeze into pan, have drained oil & the clean bucket under plug is getting antifreeze in it so assume o-rings at least bad. If I tear into that far might as well overhaul it and I don't have any history on it now. 401 is a good motor with known history, 970PS has hole in bottom of trans housing. Will the 401 fit under the low pro sheet metal? I have extra hood sheet metal to extend for 6 cyl length, width?. Will the shorter radiator handle the 85 hp? The early 401 block is already machined for the steering shaft. Will I need the fylwheel, starter and ring gear from a 970 mechanical shift? What clutch? Or should I just sit on the 401 and find another 930 or 970 to put it in?

Thanks,
Brad

That is not a bad swap but you will need the 6 cylinder bell housing and input shaft or be satisfied with the smaller 830 clutch and flywheel. I have a 400 4 cylinder project running with a small clutch and it is over 100 HP but that pressure plate was beefed and a 6 wing button clutch installed. The larger flywheel and clutch assembly from a 6 cylinder will not fit a 4 cylinder housing.

The hood will be a special challenge, look at the post that JHH put up and his 830 with similar shaped engine and his is a Hi Pro hood. His is a four cyl but you will get the idea

Is this a work tractor or a puller? We use minimal cooling systems on the pullers as they are only under power for very short time and with electric fans and waterpumps can be cooled off while shut off by just running the cooling system

Is there a way that you can tell it's a Hi-Pro hood? I was wondering about that but couldn't tell for sure if it was high tin or low tin.

High tin the exhaust comes out threw the hood just like the comfort king. Where are you? I've welded several of those 970/1070 rear ends. I asume it is because the pto brake got under the bull gear?

560farm is the one with busted trans housing.

I understand about the exhaust, but the pictures that JHH posted below don't show where the exhaust originally came out. I'm assuming either mEl knows this tractor or he may be looking at the height of the bottom of the tin in relation to the block/cylinder heads. ???

I know JHH and admittedly I was in error as it is a lo pro tractor, JHH pointed that out in the other post. It is a beautiful effort and I'll bet a real hoot to driveI. It would be neat to feel what double the horse at least feels like in a TC tractor coming up thru the rpm range given the torque multiplication factor. mEl

Jon I'm in northeast Il. I think your right about pto brake & bull gear. I have the piece(s) that broke and fell out. I also thought about welding it. I didn't pull the pto & 3pt to peek inside and see exactly what all happened. I have enough other good/easier projects and don't need the tractor, tired of looking at it & some others. Good friend & neighbor bought it new.

Lamont, The high tin tractor will have the steering column completly under the dash. The low tin will have the steering clolumn come through the bottom of the dash panel. High tin has bigger fuel tank and taller grills like the comfortking models

Right. I just couldn't tell whether the pictures that JHH posted were of a hi-pro or low-pro. I have sheet metal to build both but would prefer to keep it low-pro. I think it looks better.

Thanks guys, I was wanting some different ideas and answers. The 830 is a low profile dual range. This would only be to use lightly and take to plow days, no tractor pulling.

Brad

We put a 451bdt in our 830 dual range puller, we ended up using the 12" clutch and flywheel from the 830 got the heavier clutch and pressure plate from hy-capacity never had any slip we are running 200 plus horse. This is a very fun little tractor I bet even with the 401 she would still do a good job, I have always wanted to hook ours up to a chisel plow or a big disc just to play. When I was trying to find a hood that would work tried several options had a low tin hood from a 930 but it was to short. I still believe there will be enough clearance for the exhaust and valve covers it may be tight. You may end up making a hood like you said that is what we did took two 830 hoods and made one longer one hope it all works out for and you get to enjoy having some fun with it as much as I have
